Thanks for the great write up. Did it yesterday and it works fine.

Is there normally a delay in switching the locker off? I only tested it a couple times but it took 10-20 seconds to unlock.

Also should it only be locked and unlocked while stopped or can I be moving?

If the Radio Shack near you is closed, I used this relay from Amazon. Works fine.

Thanks for the detailed write-up. I actually did this mod on my 2015 a couple weeks ago using some other instructions. Your version is much easier to follow.

I too am interested in some sort of upgraded switch to protect from an inadvertent activation. I like the covered toggle switch idea, although that would require some sort of filler plate for the hole in the dash after removing the stock switch.

Does anyone make a switch plate adapter that changes the original dash switch to a small round hole? (For a toggle switch)

I personally like the idea of being able to lock my rear differential when running 4HI. I have a ten mile stretch of road on my way to work every winter that drifts very badly. I've been stuck every year with my old Ford Taurus.

This year I hope to keep a steady 35-40 mph pace while in 4HI and a locked rear. This seems like a better idea than waiting until I get stuck before using the diff locker.

Nice write up. And great follow up suggestions in here too. I might be doing this mod this month. I think I have a 3 day weekend coming up this month.

For what it's worth, I did this relay locker mod to my 2013 OR and one time accidentally hit the locker switch while driving and all it did was the locker light blinked. It did not engage or do any damage. I wouldn't recommend trying it but seems like the system still knows that the truck is moving over the 3 or 5 mph speed and didn't let it engage. I'm getting ready to do it to my 2015 now. I plan on using the JQX relay listed above only I'm using the 10A version instead of the 5A.

Did the locker mod today. Had all the stuff I needed in hand and only took about 30 minutes from start to finish. Works great with the JQX relay from Amazon.

when adding a mechanical relay, it is usually best practice to also add a diode in parallel with the relay (called a flyback diode). without it, nothing bad should happen to the ecu or other electrical components in your truck (since the battery is not a perfect, constant source - everything is made to handle small voltage spikes - so should be fine) but the diode will prolong the life of the switch. it will take a few extra milliseconds for the relay to release.... but who's worried about a few milliseconds?

use a fast switching diode to make sure this transient event does not take place

background info if anyone is interested:

    http://electronics.stackexchange.co...ck-diode-with-an-automotive-relay/56323#56323

I can make a little diagram if anyone is confused about this

Edit: I've done this mod with and without the diode, and there is no noticeable difference. except my circuit is now protected :headbang:

I wish this mod didn't require cutting. If there is a way to and someone could make a plug in harness that accomplishes the same thing I bet they could make some nice $$

Why? Do you know anyone that's done the mod and been like "man I wish I could go back to stock"?

No but I know many including myself who don't want to cut wires on a new truck.

Maybe once my warranty is up I will.

There's really no way to make a harness without cutting the wires anyway, since the part of the wires you are cutting feed into the 4wd ECU.

Unless you could get the wires out of the pins in the plug going to the 4wd module. possible but you might break something in the process. not worth the time IMO

true, but I'd consider that more risky than just cutting and crimping on a new connector.

The locker design changed for the 2016's, not sure if the wiring change but I know the locker is integral to the 3rd member now. If somebody downloads a 2016 electronic wiring diagram we can compare.

    I've never even sat in a '16 o_O

My suggestion would be to pull out your glove box and take a look at the 4wd module. if everything looks the same, go from there -> your truck...your call
