Are you speaking from experience of installing an ARB in the tacoma?

    That might be true....

But overall - carrier sizes are not created equal. Some carriers can be larger in size (deeper) than the stock carriers. The gears that install on those larger carriers can have the same ratio but would need to be shorter in size to fit in the same housing.

Even if your stock original gears would fit - a gearing setup is very critical. If you don't get it right (especially with an ARB), you could totally destroy your gears AND the ARB.

I think there is some talking past each other. You are both right.

Jan said a gear setup is needed- Not necessarily brand new gears with a new ratio to anything. Gotta get the ARB carrier and the gears set up to fit properly- with the proper shims and what not...If I understand gear/differential building correctly (and I saw it on HorsepowerTV on time....I'm nearly a pro)

No, I have not installed an ARB in a Tacoma myself. Although, I have researched this topic thoroughly, and have installed a handful of differential carriers in the past, along with R&P changes which will always require a full setup.

You are spot on about carrier sizes not being equal, and this why I stated that at the least, new carrier shims will be required in order to get a proper setup. There are instances where you can get away with a perfectly good setup and only end up changing the carrier shims, and even some where that is not required (replacing an OEM carrier with an OEM carrier).

The RD90 is designed to work with the factory gears and will simply replaces the OEM open differential carrier that comes in the Toyota "8.4" rears.

I guess my original statement was misinterpreted, because I by no means meant that the possibility of a full setup would not be required.

No problem...we were talking the same thing in a couple different ways.

All too often (without research) - people tend to think ARB's are a bolt-in & go installation. It's a lot more complicated than that, especially if you want it done right and to last.

    OK....I'm not doubting that.

Why don't you explain exactly what was involved & costs to have an ARB put in to the original poster (BBQ Boy).

Your original post - doesn't exactly explain everything fully, IMO.
The RD90 and a compressor is all you need.
You don't need a gear set or a new third.
