Amazing that people will spend thousands of dollars for their trucks and know nothing about them, let alone how to use all of the features.

Chances are if the OP is asking the questions, he is not doing anything on/off road to warrant a locker or lsd.

To clear things up from earlier..... I was referring to the ARB air locker - NOT the toyota elocker that's on the TRD Offroad models. The ARB air locker is aftermarket and it probably one of the best aftermarket selectable lockers out there. It's a lot easier to engage than the e-locker (apparently).

ARB air locker switches look like this:

I was just reading my buddy Fred`s latest curmudgeing "Despicable. Without redeeming features": "Fred--that ugh! man--is the ideological equivalent of the Hillside Strangler": "Fred deserves his own entry in the DSM V":

At any rate, there are other twisted, brain-fried wackos out there who have too much time on their hands and read this stuff, probably while cleaning their guns.
Another collection of outrages, irresponsible ravings, and curmudgeonry from Fred and some innocent magazines that foolishly published him. Put Fred Reed in the search at thingy at B&N and the book will pop up like mushrooms on a decaying stump. Tell everyone you came to the site by mistake while searching for articles on cannibalism. Your childhood made you do it. We're all victims nowadays.

You have to look on the rear diff, if you see a silver and red sticker that says LSD oil only you're in luck you have a LSD. That was the case with my SR5.

    thats incredible to me too...

i got lucky...dealership didnt know what they were selling me :D

they had kbb listed for an 02 xcab 4x4 without the trd package extras which at the time wouldve cost me like $1500 more

and they sold it to me under what they thought the kbb was :D

actual kbb for what i got at the time was 22500

    they listed kbb at 21000

    i bought it for 19000

    :D:D:D

oh and i knew what a locker did and how to use it when i purchased the truck

I bought mine with the locker knowing what it does. :D I knew I'd need it at some point since I wanted to go offroading. Then again, I researched the truck for over a month before buying it. That was doing "build you own" to get the parts/options I wanted to tell the dealer exactly what I wanted, and reading up on the features. I'd also been watching the double cabs since they came out in 2000 or 2001 so I'd been patiently waiting for 6 years to make the purchase. So I knew what I was getting when I made the nearly 30k investment. It's a shame others don't do the same and wonder why they don't know how stuff works or what it does.

As for lsd vs locker in winter, locker works just fine for me. If I need more traction than the open diff and good tires give me then chances are I need 4wd on anyway just to pull the front end around. Or to make the front dig through snow instead of bogging down. So I fail to see how an LSD would really be any better. I can probably count on 1 hand the number of times I've had 1 wheel spin when I wasn't messing around offroad TRYING to spin the tires. And with that I don't have LSD clutch packs to wear out and need replacing, or be utterly useless when I REALLY need both tires spinning (off camber, wheel in the air, etc).

Danusa: You need to be in 4LO for the locker to work unless you've done the "locker anytime" mod (in the cheap/free mod thread in my sig). Even then until you use it a lot it takes a while to engage. So engage 4LO, push the lock button, and drive back n forth a few feet (had to do 30ft or so with mine first few times) and watch the light. If it doesn't go solid try wiggling the wheel back n forth while driving slowly. Sometimes it takes a bit to get the gears lined up until you've used it enough to wear them down a little. Mine engages faster than 4Hi now I've used it so much.

Oh, and I'd recommend doing the locker anytime mod! Makes it SOOOOOOO much more useful having that extra bit of traction in 2wd AND 4Hi not just 4LO! :D (more fun in the snow and mud too... )
