If you had to choose would you rather have air lockers or electric?

Personally I like ARBs in the front and spools in the rear for a pure crawler. DD/mixed use ARB hands down. Just look at the top finishers at King of the Hammers I think every one of them runs ARB lockers.

I'd rather have air since they fail open. It's going to be a slow drive home if something goes wrong with an e-locker when it's locked. That said, most important to me is the reliability of a Toyota so I'll take the factory installed option no matter what it is. So, although I prefer air, I have the TRD OR with the e-locker.

Toyota's e locker always failed me. I don't know if it's the actuator or the actual locker itself, but I've had 2 trucks with the e locker and they both don't work. With my previous truck, it worked intermittently, and towards the end when I sold it, it stopped working altogether. This truck I have now, it never worked. So I wouldn't call these lockers reliable at all.

Hope I'm a bit luckier!. Never had a problem with them on my 1998 Tacoma.

While on the subject, I'm looking into an ARB setup. What all exactly do I need? I know I need the locker itself and onboard air, but what else? I apologize for the ignorance, just don't know a damn thing about air locker setups. Links and/or part numbers from ARB would be awesome.

I looked on their website I'm new also to it. I emailed arb and this is the response they sent me hope it helps.

Hi Aaron! Thank you for your interest in ARB Air Lockers. We’re fairly certain that the front axle has not changed on this vehicle from previous model years, however, it looks like the rear in some trucks is going to change to the same axle that the export Hilux has. It’s a larger unit. We have not had the opportunity to test fit the new axle in the 2016 truck yet, so we cannot add the lockers to the USDM guide until we do. The good news is we most likely have existing lockers that will work in the new axle. On our SEMA truck, the front took an RD111 with the 3:91 gearing, in the rear ours had a traditional 8.0” RD132. The new one is apparently 8.75”. You can tell the difference between the two axles by the size of the retaining bolts for the Third Member; the 8.0 uses 12mm vs 14mm for the 8.75”. Hope this helps.

Thank you. That helps a little. I'm not close to purchasing an air locker setup yet, but when it's time, I'll call ARB to make sure I get the right parts. My current question is more basic. Besides the locker and onboard air, do I need anything else? It's more of a "how much am I going to have to spend to make this happen" question. Thanks.

Ran an ARB in the back of my '94 for 5 years. Worked flawlessly and I had onboard air to boot. If Toyota offered the cab/trans combo I wanted in a cheaper configuration that's exactly the route I'd be going this time as well. They don't and I'm using an e-locker for the first time. The two times I've used it in the two months since taking delivery it's worked just fine, time will tell if it stays that way.

Did you mean Air and Electric? The Autos I was referring to are the Detroit/Yukon Grizzly type.

To install ARB's is NOT CHEAP.
The ARB replaces your entire carrier inside the diff / inside 3rd member. I'd highly recommend having it professionally installed. Installing an ARB requires a complete ring & pinion setup and most likely (highly recommended) to buy new ring & pinion gears & bearing kit/s. If you were ever thinking about changing your gear ratio, now is the time to do it.

I had 2 - ARB's in my Dana 44's in my Jeep. Professionally installed many many years ago.

To get the ARB functional quickly - just buy the ARB air compressor. We used the ARB air compressor for a year or more before we built a complete onboard air setup with air tank mounted under the tub. A good onboard air setup is not something you want to slap together quickly...you'll want to take time and research (or else you won't be happy with the results when airing up tires & such).
