I have a 2wd SR5 PreRunner and I want to take it in some mud. However I really dont want to get stuck, would a locking rear diff be a wise investment or am I just wasting my time and money? I want to get the most out of my 2wd truck without going 4x4.... any suggestions?

2WD with a locker will go close to 3 times farther than with out with good driving. Not as far as 4x4 but I've impressed evryone that has ever rode or watched me with my trd OR PRERUNNER. Locker=best off road mod IMHO (maybe a winch but thats for those who know not their limits)

the locker will help, but depending on the mud....4x4 is a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE "need"

generally, traction obstacles like loose sand and mud require 4x4. playing on the rocks may not

Ill definitly look into getting a locker. what are some good ones? I dont know much about lockers other than the different types like electrical, air, and mechanical. Whats the best bang for my buck.

99% of the people that will comment are gonna say ARB air locker. They are extremely dependable and run off of air, so with that comes a compressor and the ability to air up your tires and run small air tools as well. The down fall is they are expense for and entire setup. But worth the money in the long run...

Close to 3 times further, huh? Well with 4x4 you get just shy of 34.23 times further.

How often are you gonna go in the mud? Because, if you don't go offroad much - the 'investment' might not be worth it. Putting a locker in can be expensive.

You might be better off grabbing a buddy with a 4WD truck, some tow straps, and basic tools....

Depending on the situation.... even a locker might not help ya and you'll still have to be yanked out.

Just make sure....NEVER GO OFFROADING ALONE (have another vehicle with you)

If you not driving on the snow, you can install Lockright wich is now around $300 and you can install it yourself.

This morning I woke up and saw an elephant in my pajamas, how it git in my pajamas is still blowing my mind.
    I hate misplaced modifiers.

I think what was meant was that a winch will pull u out of the mud and will do nothin to prevent an accident in snow where a differential will help u in slippery conditions.

Bro, when you add the locker to 4x4 it just gets crazy. I don't have the calculations to even figure that out.

It's pretty scarey. Not having one wheel as a tracking wheel just lets the rear end get loose all the time. An aggressive LSD can be bad enough in the snow, a locked rear end in the snow for everyday driving would not be a good idea.

I recently took my 2wd PreRunner w locker mudding. Had a great time and once I got stuck, I activated my locker and was able to Rock myself out of the mud. It most assuredly kept me from needing a tow. One thing to be aware of is the tread on your tires. By the time I was done my tires were soo caked in mud, that they looked completely bald. I have generic AT's and in sure that was the reason for my getting stuck. Other than not having 4wd, the right kind of tread on your tires will go a long way to giving you as much traction as possible. Preferably something that can prevent the mud from caking in between the tread.

Ha. I was thinking more of a tread style that helps to throw mud out of the tire, rather than keep it all caked up. but I kinda agree with you :D
