Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
u'd have to make sure that the axle housing is the same size, but if it is, it should work

u can get a complete third member already assembled with an arb or Detroit locker. i am going with the Detroit locker as u need no switch or anything to activate it its just pretty much always there. i have seen it for 650 if u send in your third member asa core. or u can just pay 1200 if u dont want to be down a few days with no rear, lol

    the short answer is:

    about $750 for the locker
about $200 for the air system
about $150 for Toyota misc parts
then add installation, it can easily be $500-$1000

And you DO want locker if you offroad a lot... the VSC works very well (incredibly well) but it's still not a locker!

You do not want a Detroit if there is any amount of snow where you live.

I would have to recheck on my '09, but the LSD is off when you're in 4LO, and you can easily have a switch to turn the VSC off.. Lot's of FJ guys have them

There is a switch to turn the VSC off and at the same time it activates the LSD.

The LSD only works in 2WD mode's though, It does not operate in 4WD.

Also are you aware that if you hold the VSC button for 3 sec it turns off both VSC and TRAC, but if I understand correctly the LSD does not operate at this time.

Just be patient, keep your eyes pealed, and you will find your self a deal.

A while back I got an OEM LSD from a member on here that was installing a locker in his truck. Heres the total cost involved to install the LSD.

$280 IIRC for the LSD (approx 2k miles on it) Pulled it apart to verify this, and their was NO wear on the clutch disks or plates.
    $8 Rear end gasket
$46 Timken carrier bearings (2) - Toyota OEM are over $50 a piece , and no better than the Timkens.
    $22 Carrier shim kit
    $25 Gear oil and modifier

$50 - Tip/Install (installed myself with the help of a rear end mechanic that is a friend of mine)

    $430 Total Cost

Scope out the X-Runner forums and you might be able to find something for the 5-Lugger.

did you have to change the whole rear diff or just the internals? was it on a five lug? or a prerunner

The swap was on my pre-runner but the principle is the same for your 5-lug, and will require the same parts.

You can get by without using new carrier bearings, although it is a good idea to start off with fresh bearings while your in there, so I decided it was cheap insurance to buy new ones. You do not need to replace the axle housing, or third member. Just pull the third member, remove the open carrier, replace with the new LSD carrier. You will also use the differential carrier shims to adjust your carrier and make sure the foot print on your ring gear is good.

You cannot "turn off" a true LSD. What most of you are talking about is Auto LSD which is ATRAC.

The rear diffs on the 5 lugs are different. Toyota doesn't have an LSD for those carriers. Something aftermarket might be available though.

Does it have the same 3rd and axle as the other 5-luggers?
