I was told that modern gas tanks are impossible or at least very difficult to siphon. OEs stopped using locking gas caps for that reason.

Siphon, Smiphon- gas thieves just stick a screwdriver through the plastic tank and drain it. Dont put a locking cap on it, my steel tank on my Gen 1 got drilled after the theif couldnt drill through the lock on my plastic locking gas cap.

I'm not worried at all by what someone could steal. I'm worried about what someone could put INTO the tank. Ever see what a half pint of 50/50 antifreeze does to a fuel system?

This is why I want a locking gas cap as well. There’s a lot of vandalism in my area and there have been reports of people putting soda in gas tanks. Anyone know of any tethered gas caps for a 2018?

All the new locking gas caps are made out of cheap plastic that can be popped off in 10 seconds flat,so dont waste your money.

I know nobody checks the gas cap before each use of the truck so it will not stop problems before they start but , if I had a sudden problem with the running of the engine , and saw a broken into locking gas cap , I would have a pretty good idea where to start to diagnose the problem . Since I am pretty sure there are baffles preventing getting a hose down a filler neck in modern vehicles . I would not have to wonder if it was the last gas I bought , or just a sudden failure of anything on the truck it self. If it were a thief , and they tried to siphon from the filler neck and failed , the thief would most likely do the hole drilling in the tank method . If that happened it also would tell me the fuel system was most likely ok because they wanted fuel , and I need a new tank . A person that steals the gas ,and then pours sand or whatnot in the filler neck is , well someone who is not only cheap and desperate , but really hates the owner .
In my mind , locking gas caps are worth it for me , and I have them .

OK, if you are an friggen fuel thief, don’t read this!

I drained what was left of the fuel in my tank by using fish air line tubing and cutting the tip off diagonally so it was sharp. It feeds through the “baffles” and corners right down to the bottom of the tank. An easier method is to siphon, as what happened to another member here, from a cut in the bend of the filler hose right behind the fender moulding.

My solution to keeping people away from my parked car at night or wherever I go is to put a magnet behind one of these HF driveway sensors and sticking it on my car near the back at night. Put it at about waist level to avoid cats triggering it. It alerts me in the house 100’ away if someone is next to my car: If you really want to keep people out while keeping drillers away, use a locking cap and a sensor.

The idiots who drilled my tank tried drilling my plastic gas cap lock off first-and they bent the edges of the filler trying to pry the cap off, and twisted the fuel door doing it, and the cap still worked and stayed locked! So they drilled the tank instead.

Good tip to know for needing emergency gas for a generator etc. All my tropical fish died many years ago so I will have to buy some tubing just to have incase .
Slick idea with the HF sensor too.

Out of curiousity. Did her cap have two locating ears or was it a threaded type that screwed in?

Damn. I'm not doubting you. I was on a trip to WV when I discovered that the key to my locking Stant gas cap would not unlock the cap. Tried the other key and that one wouldn't work either. I went into my trusty tool kit and retrieved a pair of Vise-Grips and it took me almost ten minutes to get that bastard apart. My cap used the two ears to turn in and lock. I wonder if that makes a difference in design (doubt it) or perhaps it was the age of the cap, which I bought in 2006???

Locking gas caps dont stop anyone from getting into your tank and pouring something in it. The older caps made out of metal was a whole different story.

As someone stated before, if you see your cap destroyed then you know to be on the lookout for something put IN your tank or taken OUT of it. It's like normal locks on house doors. It keeps the honest people honest.
