If you have manual hubs on front wheels turn dial to LOCK
MT push clutch in and shift the short stick from 2 Hi to 4 Hi
Shift long stick to 1st gear
4 Low is for low speeds
No tight turns or 4 Low on dry pavement.
    Hope this helps

Need to know what kind of 4wd Tacoma you have...manual hubs or ADD? Push button 4wd or J-stick?

Don't operate in 4X4 on any hard dry surface at all. It is only for conditions where traction is poor. If you're careful and only move a few feet in 4X4 on hard dry surfaces you probably won't break anything, but if you forget and try to turn you stand a very good chance of breaking expensive stuff. Best to avoid the risk.

These are stout little trucks. You're not going to 'splode your truck if you drive it in 4x4 on pavement. You may increase the wear and tear if you do it often, but you're not going to break anything. But I'm sure someone has a story where they accidentally put it in 4x4 in their driveway and the transfer case fell off, but that's hardly normal.

@Killroy, there should be a card on your sun visor with instructions.

About the worse thing is the torque bind .

Worse case you jack up at least one front and one rear wheel to get it out of gear
