Locking Tailgate Key Info

At least it was only a year. Sometimes auto manufacturers don't listen to consumer complaints/suggestions at all.

 

Should be able to buy a tumbler for a 2017 tailgate and key it to your key inside your smart key. Not sure of the cost of the new lock cylinder.

 

As someone else said 2017 they changed the key to match the one in the fob.

 

Just wanted to post this as I am in the process of having my 2016 tailgate cylinder lock upgraded to a 2017 tailgate cylinder lock. You would need to get the cylinder re-keyed to the correct key to the key fob. I ordered the parts from Toyota and it's pretty pricey. The part number is 69055-04020 and the list price is 176.92 before tax.

I went to 3 locksmiths today and all three said they could not get the blanks in order to make me a spare key for the tailgate on my 2017 TRD OR, and if I could get the blank they would charge me $90 to make the cut. Are they all ignorant or is really the deal on just making a spare tailgate key?

 

Wow. I bought the blank for the Lexus credit card smartkey (cool mod) from eBay for something like $22 and then had a local locksmith cut it for $20. Works in the tailgate lock.

Find a fourth locksmith.

 

The key in my FOB works the tailgate.

 

Yeah I have a 2017 Off-Road and the key within the fob does work for the tailgate lock...

 

As mentioned earlier in this thread us with 2016 TRDs and Limiteds have a different key for the tailgate, and the one in our fob won't work. They fixed this for 2017

2016, here. Looked all over the place for that tailgate key. I never found it, thankfully my dealership is hooking me up with a new key
