My truck doesnt beep when its unlocked or locked, and every other tacoma owner i've met theirs does. is there something that can be done without having to add an aftermarket security system i hate not knowing if my truck is locked or not i get paranoid.

Mine does beep so I've never given it much thought but it seems like I've seen this dealt with on here before. Were you not able to find something by searching? I'm sure someone will pipe in.

The 2nd gens from what I have learned dont have the beep when you unlock or lock. I have a 98 4Runner that did and so when I got my Tacoma I called the dealership and they told me they didn't make the 2nd gens with the beep feature.

Check out Mod #16 on this page. I guess you have to spend about $30 or something.

Mine does and I think most others do as well. The non-beepers are the minority if I'm not mistaken. I don't really know why. I've never looked into it because it's never been an issue for me.

This is from ToyotaNation (yours being a 2008, it may not beep):

Toyota calls the beeping an "answer-back" function. It's new for 2009 on the Tacoma; other Toyota models have had it for a long time.

Here's how you toggle the answer-back beep off and on for the factory keyless entry (not Toyota's VIP alarm add-ons) on 2009+ Tacoma models:

    1. Open the driver's door, and insert the key into the ignition. Leave the door open.
    2. Remove the key from the ignition, and within 5 seconds, re-insert the key and then turn the ignition to ON.
    3. Wait at least 10 seconds, but less than 20 seconds. After waiting, press a button on the remote twice. Press the same button two times - don't press two different buttons. The system will acknowledge with a beep if you did it right.

Toyota's instructions for this sort of thing are very literal and must be followed EXACTLY. It's helpful to use the flashing ":" symbol in the clock to count the seconds in step 3.

If you disconnect the battery, the setting will return to the factory default setting of ON.

Really that is weird. I guess the dealership lied to me because they didn't feel like looking into it. I haven't really seen or been around other 2nd gens so I really have no first hand experience all I know is what the dealership told me. Does your truck the the V.I.P Security system from the factory or the dealership? Because I wondering if the trucks with just the keyless entry like mine dont beep and the ones with the alarms have the beep.

It looks like I'm wrong. I guess mine just beeps because it is an '09. No, I do not have the Viper system. Like I said, mine beeps, and I like it, so I never gave the issue much thought. There is still that cheap mod I posted though. Good luck.

I want to meet the guys that come up with these procedures. Pretty soon it will be "park vehicle facing north. turn key to 'acc', open passenger side window 3/4 open then count to a number greater than 13 but less than 17. Open drivers side door 1/2 way, adjust passenger mirror downward until it clicks 4 times, turn radio volume to 37, adjust bass to -3, reset trip B odo, start engine, rev to 3700 rpm, shutoff immediately. Repeat 4 times and you'll know you got it right if a piston blows out of the hood."

Man it would be real funny if this was just a joke and we get a bunch of guys sitting in there trucks turning there ignition on and off.

Maybe the guys who has the beep paid for the upgraded alarm system. I only have the keyless entry and mine does not beep. The dealer removed the upgrade because I opted not to pay an extra $500 for it.
