Why would you leave it running with a fob inside of it though? The truck acts the same when taking both fobs with you, or better yet, only carrying one fob in the first place, so why even bring your spare?

It’s not really clear what you’re asking for since you listed two viable solutions to your own problem with your first post. Aside from those, autostarting it after you’ve locked it is about all you can do

Are you not afraid of losing both your primary fob and your spare in the same incident or do you have more than 2 fobs?

I personally think a dog is better protection for my truck than a locked door, but I guess it depends on the dog and also on the thief.

I just bought the truck and hadn’t taken the other fob out and put it in the house yet, I just got out the other day to run into the hardware store to grab something and tried to lock it with it running and it wouldn’t work so I was just curious.

As other have said, it seems like the only way is to use the key inside the fob.

Something to keep in mind-before police K9 units had remote temp monitoring and would roll the windows down if the engine shut off, K9 handlers would leave the windows open or cracked so there was still airflow if the engine shut down while they were away from the car. If your dog is vocal, it also lets anyone who takes interest in your running car hear them loud and clear.

It's a Toyota legal team thing. The lawyers don't want you to gas your garage, or run yourself over, or lock your newborn baby in the parking lot. It's engineering to the lowest common denominator.

Or, as my engineer mentor was fond of saying, "whenever you think you finally made the perfect idiot proof device, God invents a bigger idiot."

    Oh look, another mod....
Here's an idea: Instead of leaving the keyfob in the truck. Just set the climate controls to turn on as soon as the truck starts. Then stop the truck, get out, and use the app or keyfob to remote start it.

That will keep the truck locked and running (until you open the door). WaaLaa, problem solved. Right?

True, though other car makers have also gotten some bad press from highly bizarre tragedies, particularly if it involved a certain actor that died at his own mailbox. :boink:

My wild guess is that some manufacturers go through a much more strict "what-if" process than others, and everyone has different solutions to the rare extenuating possibilities.

Unrelated to the fob, but it was the first one that crossed my mind. Anton Yelchin got pinned against a gate by his own Jeep. Apparently it wasn't in park when he hopped out to check the mail (electronic gear selector). Poor Bastard.

If i’m just running to the store, I leave the dog at home…

To me its a matter of, what if.

what if i dont get back to the truck right away? Or a medical emergency happpens?

    what if it shuts off?

what if a concerned citizen beats my windows out because there is an animal in my vehicle on a hot day?

what if i get charged with animal neglect?

As far as i see it, you have three options:

    1. leave your animal safely at home.

    2. Leave your spare keys at home, get out of the truck and manually lock your door with your key and hope the truck stays running. (It will auto shut off after 30 minutes if you didnt know).

    3. Set the controls on what you need, applicable to the current weather, shut the truck off, get out, remote start it (if you have it), and it will run for 10-15 minutes (to me thats too short of a window to gamble on with an animal, personally).

Additionally, i hope nobody takes this gamble with a child either.

EDIT: with this all being said, I have personally done it. HOWEVER, my remote start system is aftermarket. It runs for ten minutes. I can activate it from the drivers seat, take my key out of the ignition, the truck will stay running for ten minutes. Then i lock the doors and I ALWAYS stay within eyesight of the truck, with a timer on my watch so I know how much time I have before I need to drop what i’m doing and return to the truck, OR hit my remote for one more ten minute cycle while still staying within eyesight of the truck/animal. My remote start will only work for two ten minute cycles before you have start the truck manually with the keyed ignition (then it resets and allows two more remote starts).

I think i’ve only ever done what I just described TWICE and it was because I was traveling alone with the dog. I do everything I can to avoid a situation like that now.

My Golden Retiever loves to ride in the Cab. If I need to make a quick stop, I lock the truck (engine off) and leave the back window open (which it is always open except in a rain storm). Even on a hot day, he is fine for 2 or 3 minutes with the window open. I try to park near where there is lots of foot traffic or he is in my view.

I will admit, there are crappy parts of my area where I will not leave my dog alone. Generally, on a hot day we pull up near a Porsche with its top down as its owner is in a store. That is my gauge on if we are in we still in the good part of town.
