I was wondering who on here has done the install. I have heard mixed messages on what needs to be done on Toyota thirds to install the lockright. It seems as though the 8.4" does not need the carrier removed from the third and the ring gear does not need to be removed.

    Can anyone confirm this???

I read this from Chase at East Coast Gear supply

"As far as installation goes. Some vehicles require the ring gear to be removed from the carrier in order to drop the crosshaft out. On vehicles with side adjusters 14 bolt, chrysler rearends, and toyota 3rds, not 8.4 The backlash will need to be reset to the factory specifications."

i just recently put one in mine and i had to take the ring gear off to get the cross shaft out. there was no way around it.

are you thinking of putting one in?

yep im going to... just weird that chase said no backlash required but maybe its because the 8.4" doesnt have side adjusters? :notsure:

install seems pretty easy and straight forward.

What keeps the retaining pin in there?

also gear ratios effect the thickness of the ring gear. i guess ill find out when i pull it out...

some vehicles do not require removing the ring gear just keeping my fingers crossed that the 4.10s are one of them. but not with my luck...

Nope, most likely you will have to remove it. I had to remove it on my 4.10's (1gen truck with same rear diff)
So I am pretty sure you will have to too. Just mark everything so it goes in the same position as before and you will be fine..

Yup it's already done. Only thing I may have screwed up is I think I'm one or two teeth off when putting the R&P together. My mark got smudged off somehow. It doesn't make any noise and seems fine. Fingers crossed.

Took about 5 hours only because I had to make a jig to hold the diff while I took the ring bolts out.

yup used the max lock red locktight on the ring bolts and the bearing case bolts and used grease on the lockright teeth but it seems the grease wore out becasue the more i drive it the less smooth it is... oh well, not my dd so i dont really care.
