Give it time my friend....give it time.

It's not so much the Transfer case binding up. It's the CV joints. I've seen countless of CV joints blow-out on the trails because people were turning tightly while applying throttle.

Every truck is different. If you've been using it like you say, then consider yourself lucky.

Put it in reverse and move slighty. Usually if it doesn't move, there's still too much torque on the driveline. You have to release that torque somehow. You can do that either by going in reverse moving slightly, turning the wheel in opposite direction & back/move slightly, or even put it in 2WD and move to where you need to be and put it back into 4WD.

My steering gets very hard to turn when in 4H. When I take it out of 4WD it makes a loud clunking noise. It sounds like something was binding up and just let loose. 2008 TRD automatic 4WD.

Is this something that the dealer should look at, or is it just another Tacoma flaw?

yep, the more you turn in 4 wheel drive, the harder it gets. Ive owned 5 toyota trucks, all happen. Now them locking up is a different story. Sure when im fully turned(on snow or offroad) it still gets alot of pressure until it is straightened out again. But ive never had it stall and then not be able to move again.

So i am just careful about how much i turn. It can be a pain in the ass in parking lots.

I took the truck to the Toyota dealer yesterday. They drove it and told me that the binding up in the steering is normal. The loud clunk when I put it back into 2H is normal too.

So just to sum up my problems with my Tacoma.

The wind noise in the rear doors.........normal

The rust all over the frame................normal

The bottoming out of my springs........not normal and repaired

The steering tightning up and the loud clunk when going from 4H to 2H....normal

My frustration with my 2008 Tacoma.........normal

Cure.......suck it up, or trade it in.

I have dropped my 2012 off at the dealership for the 3rd time and they swear that it's normal for the wheels to lock up in 4wdHi. I have a piece of property with trails and gravel drives so it is not on pavement when it locks up.
I have owned trucks for 38 years and my first "driver" in 1969 was a 1965 Jeep. But I have never had a truck that couldn't back up in 4wd.

If you're turning sharp at slow speeds it will bind. You mod or less need to provide throttle if you are going to turn sharp... the tires are forced to move at the same speed while in 4wd so if you are going slow... even on ice you will experience binding.
