The problem we had with our 4Runner (that I think many people share) is that if you have a RTT, or cargo box, or carry bikes, etc you can't fit in a garage. With the taco, I can throw my bike in the back for a weekend trip and still fit in a hotel parkade. Or when we get a RTT, we don't have to street park. With the 4Runner a tent or roof box meant either street parking or taking it off every time between trips. There's definitely some advantage to having no roof back there.

Not sure why. SB gets it done! May not be the conventional Way but hey. I love my short bed

Long beds look weird to me and I’m superficial.

looking back a 6’ bed with the access cab would have been nice.

the manual in this truck blows so that wasn’t even a factor in my consideration

I just sold my 2018 Taco. Loved it, miss it. If I were to get another Taco, it would have to be a MF Long Bed again!

Access cab. Because you can get a 6 foot bed and shorter wheelbase. The access cab reminds me of the original Toyota truck. You get a normal sized bed and a back seat. Anyone complaining about the rear seat room in an access can needs to be in their own vehicle! If I wanted complete back seat comfort for my back seat passengers I’d buy a 750li lol.

But if you have kids that need more room than the access cab.... buy the DCLB. The pick up ability of the truck is a must (6 foot bed). If you need a “shorter” vehicle than the DCLB (for those who think it’s too long ) and need 4 doors, buy a 4Runner. Just thinking out loud.

7AE825E0-9FF4-4034-92CD-DD4BE47BDFF7.jpg The lack of utility was a deal breaker for me when deciding between the short bed and long bed. That extra foot is really nice on the long bed. I can fit my mountain bike in the bed of the truck and lock everything up tight. I don't think my bike would fit in the short bed without removing the front wheel. I can also fit my 7'6" surfboard (corner to corner), no way I could do this with a short bed.
I think the approach and departure angles are the same as the short bed on the long bed. The breakover is a little worse but with that said I'm running 265/70/17s (31.6 Inch Tires) and have only bumped the underbelly a couple times. With 33" tires you should be good to go unless your are doing some extreme rock crawling. The longer wheelbase makes things a little smoother on the fire roads but makes it a little tougher to turn around out on the trail if you are in a tight spot. The access cab has the long bed and the same wheelbase as the 4 door short bed if you don't need the 4 doors. I feel the short bed looks a little better when stock but I think the long bed looks better when lifted. I really like the look of the long bed especially when on 33"s.

I like my long bed sport. Great for the setup I have. The huge Smittybilt Overland XL fits within the bed dimensions as well.

That’s an awesome looking build on your truck. I bought a DCLB (same color) for the same reasons and still love my decision. I can fit a surfboard corner to corner, carry my motorcycle in the back, and will eventually build it out for a camping setup in the back.

I haven't tossed a kayak up there yet since I lifted the truck, but it'll will be fine. Getting them tied down will certainly be fun until I get my sliders built.

Just like most things both have their ups and downs.
Be honest with what you do 95% of the time, consider the 5% of what you aspire to do.
You can get a bunch of products to give more length, can’t make it shorter.
But yeah I think the short bed looks better. What you lose in bed space you get back in interior storage. I keep my seats folded down and use the back seat area for stuff (like my dog). No human has ever been in the back on my truck.

Almost got the 17’ OR short bed, just concerned thinking hobbies and needs. Happy I went with 18’ longbed. First task was rebuilding side gates, Home Depot, 6 ft fence boards, closed tailgate! Fits better with bikes too. Tight fit in garage though.

Traded in my longbed for a shortbed with no regrets. The turning radius being the big factor. Less three point turns on the trails and easier to drive around town. So far I haven't missed the 1ft of bed I lost.

If I was sacrificing turning radius and breakover angle to get a bigger bed id look full size next time around.

I had a Gen1 extra cab long bed for 19 years but recently upgraded to a Gen3 double cab short bed. I added the Amp bed extender so I don't lose the as much cargo space. The long bed would not fit in my garage and I don't haul as much stuff as I used to so it works for me.
