However, looking at the pics, it seems reasonable that one could cut off the front wall and weld in an extension.

Everything is adaptable. It's just a matter of how much time and money one wants to put into it.

Does this LR tank interfere with the stock spare tire mounting location?

You would think that, but, no...not when it comes to the LRA tank. Toyota decided that the crossmembers should be different between the two trucks. I had to build a few of my own mounts to adapt to the different crossmembers. It's wasn't overly difficult but when it's unexpected, it super sucks. The factory tank mounts differently. The factory tanks are the same, I'm sure.

The crossmembers that the LRA tank attach to are a bit different between AC and DCSB. The LRA tank was designed on a DCSB and does not bolt directly to an AC.

Oh, guessing because the dip in the frame would be farther up for the cab?

Interested if ACC is an option. I've looked at these last year a bit. Desirous because of certifications. Required for me because of need to maintain insurability and DOT specs. Expensive for same reasons.

I don't think so. The front crossmember that the tank mounts to is in the right place but it's a very slightly different cross section. And the rear crossmember just in front of the rear axle is in the right location front to back but the mounting bracket for the tank is in a different location. It's around 1.5" off to the passenger side in the AC. Really strange that there would be changes there. Of course, Toyota likes to change things mid run a lot! Things that don't really affect their process but that can totally screw an aftermarket company.

I'm in. I'm feel confident I can fit it based on what @1 Bored Clerk says.

It's not without its struggles but it can fit. Just be prepared to have the truck down for a while so you have time to figure it all out. Swapping the factory tank back in and out multiple times REALLY sucks. So much that I would have been better off renting a car and leaving the truck inoperable for a week while I figured it out. I do not look back on the install with happiness. But, now that you know, you'll go into it with a different mindset. Also realize that filling the tank full almost always means gas spewing out down the side of your truck. I've still not solved that issue. It's annoying but I don't fill up that often with a near 400 mile around town range and I've gotten that hang of knowing how much fuel to put in based on the gauge. Overall I like the onboard extra fuel. But I do wish it was a more finished solution. I wish it filled just like a factory tank.

Is there something that gets eliminated that causes the fuel not to return back to the tank?

looks like it hangs down lower than the stock one, unless pics are deceiving. not good for what we do  unless it has a double bottom, or really thick bottom. I would love a 34 gallon tank though

Well, it's just not a fully factory engineered and vetted design. It's like any aftermarket item you put on your truck. It's a compromise made to attach to the factory stuff as cleanly as possible. The vent line system, charcoal canister, fill neck angle...who knows but it all plays a part.

It hangs right at the bottom of the frame rail (like the factory tank). No lower. It doesn't have a skid plate. It is made of steel. If you are wheeling hard on rocks, I'd stick with the factory tank or work very hard to design/build a skid for the LRA tank. I've considered crafting a UHMWPE skid but I haven't bothered. My truck is more for exploring around than heavy crawling. Especially once the camper is on it. It's like any mod; what do you with the truck determines the correct mod path. Be honest with yourself and you'll be happy.
