Ruger American Ranch 5.56

-Stupid inexpensive

-Silly accurate for the price (even not for the price)

-and a bolt gun that takes AR magazines.


For a beginner doing what you’re saying you’re doing with it, there is no better rifle to learn on that I can think of.

And it’ll be something cheap you can keep around when you get better and upgrade later or something cheap that you won’t feel bad selling if you move on later.

 

Figured I'd show mine. Started off as a Remington 700 .308 SPS Tactical AAC-SD. The only thing left of Remington is the action. 6.5 Creedmoor Satern barrel, Accuracy International AICS stock, Atlas bi-pod, Vortex Razor HD 4.5x27x56 ffp mrad, Spuhr scope mount, Silencerco Saker ASR 762 suppressor, Timney Trigger (will be upgrading to Triggertech soon).
Under 2 inch group at 600 yds. I've taken it out to 1000 yds but I suck at gauging wind so really don't have a shot grouping that is accurate. Plus, finding a 1000 yd range is a little bit of a drive.

 

Still going through break in procedure so no groups yet.

I went with 6mm GT
.273 Neck Dia and .120 Freebore.

Buddy just had 3 come back that were 11, 10 and 3 month deep papered filings. Seems like batch approvals are an emerging trend too.

Shot number 12 and day 3 of barrel break in. (About 5 shots a day is all I have time for during break in.)
do 1 shot, clean barrel 100% then repeat till the barrel tells me its ready. Macro camera on phone captured this on 7th patch through. Notice the tiny copper flakes. The barrel is not ready yet. Sharp rifling on bartlein barrels I guess.
Really liking the boretech cleaning products for the job.

 

I have a new barrel on a custom Mini-14 I need to break in.

This barrel is supposed to be sub-MOA - on a Mini-14! We shall see. I hope so - it is a fun gun to shoot.

 

Where you getting your boretech products? Everywhere I look the shipping is ridiculous.

 

Midway had it in stock last week. I use there proof cleaning rod (really like that btw) the eliminator for carbon and the cu+2 for copper.

 

I hunt coyotes.

I use a .243 Win, and it's a lightweight rifle with good ammo in the 70-80 grain bullets and low recoil so you can see your shots. These bullet weights retain velocity, buck the wind better, and will drop yotes. I call in yotes into the 150-yard range or closer.

 

Update on the rifle I posted above,
1st 3 shot group with no load development yet. (16 single shots, then full clean before it broke in)
Weather was windy and light snow. Far from ideal. Still need to do a velocity ladder to fine tune a load for it but I thought this was fairly impressive.

I heard a lot of good things about the 6mm GT. Are you using Varget powder and small rifle primers? It also helps that you have a damn nice rifle with quality components. Damn nice group too!

 

I was using varget for initial break in shots. This was with hybrid100V and small br4 primers. Ogive backed 0.002 off the rifling. Hornady brass (couldn't find alphamunitions brass)

 

My buddy has a 6mmBR, and he's shot a few squirrels with it in the 500+ yard range when we go ground squirrel hunting in Northern California. I have a 20 Tactical that shoots 32 grainers over 4000 fps, and it's a laser beam. I am working on a 20 VarTarg for my wife to shoot.
