I would like to go with a semi-automatic system this time, years ago I had a dpms ar-10 that I liked but sold in which I regret. Right now my long range rifle is a McMillan tac-50 which I like but after 20-25 rounds it' beats you up pretty good.

What scope are you wanting to put custom turrets on?

On a hunting scope that may not have been setup with target style turrets, ok, it basically sets the turrets as a bullet drop compensator. The BDC reticles are designed to work this way as well. Works fine as long as you’re using the load the turrets or BDC reticle was tuned for.

Would I change out the turrets on my Vortex PST? No, if I change calibers or change the load that alters the velocity, I will re-zero the scope, run the calculations through my ballistic calculator and verify the estimates.

In their explanation of why you should buy our products, they state that figuring out the dial ups at various distances is some kinda “voodoo black magic” (my interpretation reading between the lines) and spoke about getting lost in the “clicks”. With properly setup ballistic calculator there is no voodoo required (they even have a calculator on the website) I don’t count “clicks” my 600yd dope for my 556 is 3.8mil, I dial 4mil into my elevation and shoot. If I then need to engage at 475yd my dope is 2.39mil, I dial back to 2.4mil

With a hunting scope duplex reticle the method I would employ is decide what is the max yardage I would be willing to shoot knowing I can make DRT first round hit. Then setup a point blank zero. I would then set the zero to that yardage, now I’m shooting inside the pipe using the predictable ballistic curve and never touch my elevation at multiple yardages.

thinking about the vortex...but I dunno, might be too confusing for me to explain to my wife so I prob wont do this. I havent shot out past 400yds realistically. Ive shot at a running coyote at about 500yds but not really aiming...;)

It’s actually not confusing at all, in fact quite user-friendly. I call dial-a-death, just know your yardage dial to it and go. Doesn't vortex have a BT program? Your yardage that you’re shooting is exactly in the warehouse for yardage dialing Turret’s.

EDIT: Never mind, just Nikon and Sig have those programs. I know Gunwerks has it also ,but there usually more expensive than most people (myself included) are willing to pay!

If you’re not planning to shoot more than 500yd than I would suggest going with a BDC reticle. Just remember they are tuned to specific loads so there will be some compensation that you need to verify by going to the range. Nothing better than spending some time at the range (I suggest taking a fine cigar as well, I’m quite fond of Fuentes)

If by chance you are considering getting into precision long range game I would seriously consider getting a scope that is intended for that purpose. Then take a class on precision shooting to clear up some of the confusion about what to do with turrets and reticle. All the hash marks or dots on miling reticle are not there to up the cool factor. We use those for holdovers / holdunders, wind hold, calling corrections, range estimation, etc. As Doug stated once you’ve run the numbers through the ballistic calculator and confirmed the data (hey what’d know another day at the range) you now dial up the zero for the yardage you’re shooting.

I think vortex has some bdc scopes. the one on the savage is not bdc. I believe its just mil dots, I'll have to double check.

maybe at some point I'd like to do some long range shooting. But dont really have the money to put into an expensive rifle scope, spotting scope etc. Mainly will be shooting out to about 400yds so I think we are ok for now with just the vortex scope

Let me first ask you a couple questions. What is your projected use/distance for this rifle? Is it for hunting, bench shooting, or an all-around combination of use? do you have Turret knowledge?

The Viper PST is a fine piece to mount on the Rem 700,
What base and rings are you planning to use?
