Here's something totally different - a 1942 Soviet M91/30 PU sniper rifle. I have several of these I use for Vintage Sniper Rifle competitions. We shoot ranges between 300 and 1000 yards. It shoots a 7.62X54r round with lots of ammo available - just watch out for the MILSURP stuff - it is corrosive. I load my own for consistency - it's pretty cheap to reload. The downside is a 3.5X scope - among the strongest of it's time in WWII. And, these things are War Horses - built like steel. I included a picture of my first time zeroing it - started lower left, adjusted, shot lower right, adjusted and then moved to upper bull. I had 3 rounds mixed in randomly with a slightly lower powder load - can you find them?

Not for everybody - it's a shoulder buster if you don't watch it. But, once you get used to it they shoot amazingly for their age and level of sophistication. A low-prized long-range option.1942 Izhevsk Sniper 1.jpg

These are my 91/30s. I love shooting them. The snipers from bottom up are:

    1943 Tula original

    1943 Tula restored ex-sniper - my back-up match rifle

1942 Izhevsk restored ex-sniper - my primary match rifle

1937 Izhevsk repro sniper - these were some of the first to come out of Ukraine and sport newly-manufactured scopes made in one of the original factories that made them during WWII. I will probably sell this one this year to get something else for my collection. It's a nice shooter, but I don't need a 4th sniper.

That is sweeet. My deer rifle is a no4mk1 303 Brit. Built in 1943. My mosin was built in 1935. And my favorite rifle is my m96 obendorf swede built in 1900 still looks almost brand new and shoots just as good. Still on my list is a k98, 03-A3, another no4mk1 all in full military dress.

I went the wildcat route. Just finished a 6-284. Will be starting a .20 Practical next. Factory cartridges are boring, life is to short. Whatever you use...Keep shooting!

So many good thoughts on here!!! But for varmit shooting a lot of what had been said is over kill. OP will you be doing any other hunting with this? Like do you want a gun for everything? If that is the case I would really recommend looking in to a 30-06 or a .270. The 30-06 you can get the rounds for it almost any place. The range of bullet weight is amazing. Any where from 90gr to 220gr+. The 270 is a great round as well. Many place have this round and cones in light enough rounds that you can shoot it all day and would totally f up the pelt. Plus it is not crazy expensive. But if you are looking for a gun for varmit only the .223/5.56 is a great round. But I would not try to kill anything over 500yrds with it. The 22-250 is a very fast and flat round. Only bad thing about it it's so hot it can burn up a barrel faster. But with stainless I would not really worry about it. Then the one round that I am surprised no one has said is the 25-06. I love this round. I use it for varmit all the time. And it's one of my go to pronghorn rounds. I have no problem even thinking of going out to 800yrds with it. But this is just my thoughts on it.
As far as brands I love savage. You get a great platform for your buck. I would save up for some good glass and a good range finder

How well can you shoot? That's the biggest question. See if you can find someone with lots of experience shooting long distance in your area and talk to him/ her face to face. They can give you pointers and you know they are not armchair cowboys. Honestly, it mostly depends on shot placement and your scope. But you've probably heard all of that.
You can get a cheap hunting rifle and a decent scope and do just as well as with a 5000 dollar rifle.
BTW I'm an armchair cowboy myself when it comes to hunting or shooting things outside of 200 yards. But I'm dang good up til then.

Remington makes great rifles for a good price. The model 700 AAC-SD is .308 and comes with a threaded muzzle. I was going to get one so I did a ton of research. The only thing would be to get a Hogue aluminum bedded stock, because the stock that comes on the rifle is injection molded and isn't great.

Magpul is making stocks for the 700 now. I chose the 5R and don't see a need to replace the stock. However, my stock trigger was at 12 lbs. and couldn't adjust it. I went with a Timney and I got it set at 2 lbs. It is a great shooter.image.jpg
