Depending what they are asking, you could probably easily build a better shooter for less overall cost.

Bergara HMR B14 has my interest too. Weatherby also had some great looking rifles.

The Showa is at such a low price upgrading the stock isn't out of the question. Also has a threaded barrel, Leopold scope, and a bi-pod.

My end goal is something that takes mags, has a threaded barrel, and some sort of adjustable stock with a cheek riser.

Time is on my side as I already have an old 300 Savage I like to use for deer.

    You mean Howa?

If you have the savage, why not do a switch barrel?

Did I say Showa haha! Sorry, yes Howa.

The Savage is a very old lever action. I'll try to find a pic of it. Neat old gun in a all but forgotten chambering.

Cool. Just making sure you are trying to use a Win Mag for target.

Ahh that makes more sense now.

FWIW. I’m kicking around the idea of a Howa 1500 mini in 6.5 Grendel

Huge fan of both the Bergara rifels and the Howa.

If you're going Howa, look at the barreled actions from Brownells. They go on sale on a regular basis and they are extraordinary deals. The triggers are top tier for mass produced for production rifles. I put a mini in 6.5G on a Oryx chassis and I've been very happy. Very good chassis and shoots lights out.

The Bergara are what Remington should have done with the 700 if they hadn't been resting on their laurels for the last decade. I liked the HMR in 6.5CM so well I bought the 300WM in the same rifle. Both shoot within 1/4" of my customs that cost 3x or 4x as much. Good stock, good trigger. I like the bolt handle on them as well. (Not a lot of folks know this, but Ed Shilen went over and setup their barrel making operation.)

You won't be in the wrong with either. Fantastic choices.

Are the Weathby Vanguards any good? That DBM model they have in stainless looks nice. Not a bad price either. The stock is not my favorite though, but it looks like the Howa 1500 and Vanguard's stocks are the same so not hard to replace.

Went digging for my seating depth gauge, and didn’t find it.

However, I ran across my scope’s sunshade, trigger adjustment tool, and my Lyman trigger pull scale. Got the pull moved up to 1lb 10oz average, hope that helps with sear locks on hard bolt closing. Might go up more. I happy with around 2lb, so we are still good. Was thinking about ordering an extended mag release a couple weeks ago, but held off. While digging my wife found I had bought one in like 2012, so swapped that on while I had the action out for trigger work.

Hitting the range Friday to see how ready I and the rifle are for a PRS comp I’m doing on the 20th.

For hunting can't go wrong with the Tikka T3x
100-130 yards under an inch with the right ammos. With this particular rifle shoot best with Remington HTP 130g copper bullets.

I have my precision rifles set to 3.5lb, ADs ain’t no fun

It happened to me during a DMR match transitioning on a barricade. I had a ambi bolt release, some how when the bolt closed I caught the trigger and sent one down range. I stopped shooting, started to clear the rifle, drop the mag and lock the bolt back. The RO was a bit like WTH? I told him it was an AD, he was cool about it. He wanted to know ifen I knew where it went, told him it impacted a couple hundred yards in front of the target. He said ok I’m not going to DQ you but sort out yer shit, the ambi release came off and hasn’t been on since, also made a habit of double checking on safe before releasing the bolt.

Tikka is an excellent buy for a hunting rifle, even when compared to ones twice its price. And they offer some great chamberings from the factory...I am continually tempted by one in 9.3x62.

You’re telling me... 41yrs if life, 30 of them with fire arms, over a decade using them in new and fun places, and I had my only ND in my gun room a few weeks ago.

Was showing a buddy my new trigger spring on my carry pistol, dropped the mag, opened the slide up, checked the chamber, flicked to fire, BANG.

Set the mag down, re-cleared, and looked at my friend.
    Me: you okay
    Him: yeah, you
    Me: yeah

    :looks at gun:

Me: how the hell, I had a clear chamber.
Him: yeah,I saw a clear chamber too
    Me:WTF

We recreated it. Turns out that little bastard will hang a round on the extractor if you don’t rack the slide with authority and/or all the way to the rear. I was holding the mag in my left palm so I didn’t rack it back hard enough, and only far enough to clear the chamber. As the slide came forward it rechambered the hung round and allowed it to fire.

    image.jpg

    image.jpg

Glad it was still pointed in a safe direction so my locker took the hit like a champ.

I’ve been there for a ton of NDs in my life, enough to know there is no such thing as a “AD”.
