Tikka 308, has a detachable mag but only holds 3 rounds and has a pencil barrel so there is a pretty good POI shift after more than 15ish rounds in a shorter time frame. Savage 223, no detachable mag and its a 223 so much past 600yards is pushing it.

The Tikka would probably be ok for trying out a match or 2 but would be less than ideal.

10, I could rebarrel it and put it in a chassis or have it modified to accept an external mag but I like it being a 223 and having a 16" barrel because it is fun at shorter ranges and the ammo cost is lower.

I’ll add that these days you really need a game changer bag, or something similar. Almost every stage can either be shot as a barricade, or modified prone. For those barricade style stages, the bag will allow you to hit more targets, and in turn, have more fun. When throwing a rifle on a hard prop without a bag, is just about impossible for an experienced gamer to hit targets, let alone a new competitor. And if you are new, you don’t even need to necessarily buy one, just ask someone in your squad to borrow theirs...people will line up to loan you bags.

I concur with being cheaper, i shoot a ton of .22lr for that reason.

Would you consider doing a switch barrel? That is switching the barrel and bolt face (10-20min job) back and forth between your .223 and PRS?

@whitebread speaks the truth, people will stand in line to loan you a bag.

I may be looking at a Saracen udder.

I'd probably just invest in another rifle at that point. The constant rezeroing would be a pain and I'd have to buy bottom metal and a chassis/stock anyway because it has an internal mag. For not too much more I could buy something in a better suited caliber and have it set up ready to go.

I also shoot a lot of 22! Its just too much fun.

What's wrong with 223 for PRS? Granted it doesn't have the ballistic efficiency of a 6.5 Creedmor but I've seen people hit 1000 yards with a match grade 223.

nothing, you would shoot in the “tactical” class, not much different than shootin 308

you just need to be more critical about yer wind calls due to time of flight and ballistic efficiency

It is this area. People love to loan gear to others in their squad. They’ll expect you to love it and be envious, then that confirms the their choice of buying model a over model b.

I’ve even seen people even loan backup rifles and supply the ammo after someone’s rifle goes down.

yeah I’ve seen the PRS turn into a gear whore’s paradise

Our local matches had a great group of guys who would help one another out like that

    That's good to hear!
I haven't shot PRS, but our NRL22 matches have tons of people loaning out equipment. Or match director has 3 loaner rifles for newbies. It's pretty cool, everyone helping everyone out. They'll even help you with wind and missed shot calls,,,,,,,,,,, until you start winning right? :D

Wow, I like that metal backer! They sell it at the big hardware stores?
That would be great in my basement; it's unfinished, and I'm not going to drywall it in, since it gets wet once or twice a year, since it's a 100 YO cinder block foundation.

It’s Elfa garage stuff, sold at the container store. You mount the top cross track, then hang the vertical sanctions, and everything clips on.

Started with this skew https://www.containerstore.com/s/el...ing-board-and-shelves/123d?productId=11010052 then worked with the in-store designer to modify the part list for my needs.
