Well I drove around for a bit today and found some land to shoot a little distance. Max would be about 800yrds. Nice and flat mostly but I had to shoot laying down in the bed of the taco to see the target I set up at 600yrds. 1st time ever shooting that far. Only did 3 shots but grouped under 2". I'm super happy (and super lucky) with that. Next question for y'all is opinions on the savage elite precision in a 338 Lapua? Decent gun for the money or no? Looks like I can pick one up for $1600 plus tax

I’m jealous that you can just flex on people by spending $5 a round, and about $100 a box on ammo just to plink at 800y.

I'd have to find a spot to shoot further at that point no doubt. My reloads would be a touch cheaper

Posting this in a few relevant threads to try and get a range of input:

I'm looking into my first suppressor purchase, looking for input and alternatives. First, my use cases:

Current host: 16 inch AR15, general purpose rifle for home defense, 2gun competition, plinking, rifle instruction, and limited hunting use.

Planned future hosts: bolt action 308 or 6.5 Creedmoor, 18-20 inches for hunting and precision rifle duty.

I don't plan to do mag dumps or other tomfoolery requiring a heavy-duty can. Lighter is better, shorter as well, as I'd like it to still maintain the illusion of maneuverability within the home. Hearing safe is mostly optional. I should be able to switch between hosts relatively quickly and leave the other rifle still functional.

I've been looking at the Griffin Explorr 300 as a can that should meet these needs and gives quality muzzle devices for when I can't run the can. Looking for other options that might do as well as the above or better at a similar price point, but I don't know any of the competitors in this space besides Sig or maybe Q.

Any input is appreciated, if I left anything critical out I'm open to questions.

What’s your budget? If you have plans to use it in a precision rifle TBAC is the best choice. Ultra 5 or 7

Flexible, though I'd like to stay under 1200 for the can, mount, and possibly a second mount. I hadn't considered TBAC I'll add them to the list.

I have a savage 12lrp that is configured very similar to the EP.

Action, stiff as I need with just enough ejection port for the rounds. Does make it a bitch when you muck an ejector up, see below.

Barrel, savage has some very nice factory barrels, especially in the high end. I’m constantly in the .3’s with factory match ammo.

Chassis, the MDT ACC is nice and balanced in stock form. Could use some nose weight to better balance off barricades and such, but ergo is good, damn stiff, and that fore end let’s you park your bipod waaaayyyy out there.

Bolt, mine has a standard jeweled bolt body, but as of tomorrow I’ll be dropping in a spiral fluted for chi-chi points. I have the same handle, heavy and long with good grip, it helps with the normal savage cocking lift. People like to bitch about it, but like recoil.. when it matters you don’t feel a heavy bolt lift. The floating bolt head is a good plan and works well. Be prepared to replace ejectors if you run hot loads. A popped primer or two will end its life. Replacement parts are $20 for all upgrades in the bolt head. Mine is so jammed I can’t remove the retaining pin, head of my bolt is fucked (All my fault) while I type this. And that brings us to...

DIY, this rifle is a diy dreamboat. Bolt head, bolt body, extractor and ejector are all replaced by me. Headspace issues after bolt swap, no problem, I have the tools to swap and headspace my own barrels in about 10min. Junked bolt head is a 10min job to swap out. My bolt head and fix kit was $60 with 2-day shipping.

Before I left the crazy of the hide recently, there was a good thread going on in the bolt action section discussing the merits of the new EPs. They are a fantastic value since that chassis will set you back $1200... so you’re getting a “blueprinted” barreled action for $500. Is it a super high end custom? No and it doesn’t pretend to be. At $1700 for a recreational/club level shooter it’s a damn good value.

Awesome info! The ruger precision rifle in 338 is very similar priced. I feel like it wouldn't stack up against the savage EP though. Am I correct in this thinking?

+1 on the Omega. I think they now call it the Omega 300. It works great on my Savage model 10 .308 but where I really have fun with it is on my 300 BLK shooting subs. I literally just got back from doing that. Always puts a smile on my face. I've used it a few times on a 5.56 AR and it does a fine job there. Pretty versatile can.

Forgot if I previously posted this. Few years back, I wanted to begin to play in the long range space. I figured I'd get in affordably with this Savage 10T in .308 with a Vortex Viper HS LR 4-16 x44mm. All stock.

I'll second the fact that while I can fit a few Pelican 1750s in the SB, I think you're looking for a longbed or a fullsize and just aren't fully aware of it yet.

I wish I could find one of these at a reasonable price, I've settled on slowly building up an Axis for now.

Keep an eye on Cabellas sales on the 12fv and applicable savage rebates.

I know folks that have taken them home for about $225.

I'd love that deal, the 12fv is a fantastic rifle. Do they have a 10 round mag option? I'd need one for the sort of shooting I'm looking into, and aftermarket 10 round mag solutions for the Axis exist (Mainly for the "real rifles" but thankfully they use identical mags).

Don’t know much about the stock 12fv, if it used the normal savage detachable mag body/bottom metal, then Darkeagle Customs makes a fantastic 10rd mag.

That said, at the price point the stock is likely a Tupperware noodle you’ll want to upgrade quickly. You can get Accustocks for $100 from Northland’s clearance area. I’ve even seen chassis ans HS precision stocks for under $300 there.

Yeah, long term this rifle will get a bedded Boyd's of some variety. I've tried the chassis system thing, it had an XLR Element under it that I just couldn't love and added too much weight.

My 12lrp came in a HS Precision with the full length bedding block. I can’t brin myself to sell, ill likely build a .223 trainer on it.

If you are going very long term, and happy with savage, buy one of the nicer factory rifles and save money in the long run.

I am very excited to start shooting again. They cancelled the past three matches in this area because of the virus stuff...but that ends tomorrow, with a single day regional PRS match.

I went to a friends house to check zero after cleaning the barrel, to season the bore, and verify my velocity. I brought it up 0.1 mil and called it good. It's game on.
