Somewhat? The calculator was a meme patch on a bag to separate gear, that's just for flair. I ended up ditching it. Thankfully the scope was 98% up to snuff, the zero stop shims work well enough. Oddly I might go back to the fixed 10x I had before, I need a useful reticle at low power but I'm not sure I'll be able to turn a 10x and an SFP 3-15 into a decent FFP variable. Though if I could snag a 4-16 or 5-25 Viper PSTII like my partner did I'd be squared away. Either way that's secondary.

    Big 6 for next year:

Laser rangefinding binoculars, one LRF is not enough for a team and binos are useful.
Basic tripod, two stages all but required standing supported shots
Suppressors for both team members to eliminate active ears and buddy-supported concussion, plus recoil and such. (this will get done on my end first, because I came away with half off a Thunderbeast suppressor)
Chronograph data from 30-90 degrees, extrapolating from estimations at 50 and 70 was useless.
Kestrel drop D3 to complement strelok, my Amazon anemometer was...subpar.
Ammo suited to the task, BC and velocity were both lacking, BC especially. I was subsonic at 650 yards at 35 degrees!

I could add those to my shooting toolkit, we'd have all the tools we need to gain a ton more points. Might sell the CZ for a Glock too, there was one stage where being able to trade mags would've saved us from poor planning.

I do plan to digitize all my actual takeaways for a veritable essay but those are the only things that require purchases.

To be fair the the SWFA puts some 34mm scopes to shame with how many ups it has.

    That’s funny about the calculator.

Are you trying manage your dope the hard way? I ask because there are still some purist out there. If not, just get the kestrel elite. It has temp sensitivity you can put in it, and for handloads, you can get the temp stability factor from the manufacture and do it that way as well. No need to extrapolate data, just make sure you initial chrono gets a good average. I recommend nothing less than 10rds and write down the temp to add it to your data.

Kestrel AB will help with your DA changes when you enter subsonic unexpectedly. You just need to true out those distances during your dope process. That process is under DSF. Obviously don’t rely on the kestrel by itself. Transcribe your data on paper every day as back up. I stuff mine in a wrist coach. That just leaves doing the wind in your head if your familiar with the mph method.

Funny enough vortex just dropped their new old LRF on the market pretty recently. They gots the new fury’s with AB.

I'm not super set on doing things the hard way, just the inexpensive way until my bases are covered and I know what I need. Strelok works fantastic when you do the legwork, I was unaware of how much legwork I had to do lol. The kestrel systems are where I want to go long term though.

Short term, I need to figure out a suppressor. I was fortunate enough to come away with 1/2 off any TBAC can, so I'm in the process of nailing down which one to run with and getting it going in the hope I might hopefully have it by next year.

I'm between the Dominus CB and Ultra 7. The Dominus is heavier but more suppressive and shorter.

Is it an AR, or a bolt gun? What loads are you using, I might want to give it a try. My best loads go transonic at about 1150, using 123 AMAX with 30.5 grains CFE-223. My longest shots have been to 1125 yards. I've got a couple hundred 123 Lapua Scenars to try, they have a slightly better BC than the AMAX (which has been replaced by the ELD, but I had a ton of AMAX already). My rifle is a custom AR I built.

Off to measure POI shift with the can.

tfw UPS is playing reindeer games with your Armageddon Gear order, but you have an oven gripper and a rubber band to fill the gap.

    20210203_172426.jpg

And an old plier bag to keep it from touching stuff.

    20210203_172511.jpg

Update: that oven gripper worked 1000% better than planned. Could have used an extra band, but did great.

I think it had to do with the East Coast weather and not necessarily ups themselves

I've got a .308 24" Savage 11VT barrel I'll be threading for a TBAC can mount and I'm unsure what combination of long can/short can and long barrel/short barrel I want to take it to. 24" and an Ultra 9 works well for PRS TAC and other 308 class stuff, but if I ever want to go into the woods for deer or elk I'm certain a Dominus CB on the end of a 16" tube is wildly preferable. Choices...

Anybody got experience with long and short precision setups?

Shorter barrel for hunting esp on the east coast is better in my eyes, out west in the open, you can get away with longer barrel setups. Either way, shorter generally equals lighter, which is nicer to carry. Buddy of mine back in VA uses a .300blk Mod H setup and its a great tool for the job.

I'd be tempted to rock a 16" tube and a medium long can for a woods gun. Good combo of portability and as much hearing protection as possible.

My go to bolt gun is a 26" barrel 6.5cm with a 300 Omega on the end though, so long boat anchor appears to be my style. Given thats based on what I have to work with in my budget and trust assets.

You would be neutering most cartridges with a 16 inch barrel in a bolt gun imo. In general, I would use the minimum barrel for powder burn for whatever cartridge. With a .308 I think that is a 20 inch for complete burn.

There’s some caveats of course, like the length of the suppressor can add MV and thus create more powder burn.

Have you ever been elk hunting before? Another way of going about it is figure what the possibility of your max distance you might be hunting at....and figure out what you need for your terminal performance. Elk have really tough shoulder plates. If you’re good you’ll get a shot behind the shoulder and you’ll be alright...

You might consider a LA cartridge if ranges are going to be in excess of 600y and the atmosphere starts to take effect.

Does anyone in here have experience with the Vortex Fury 5000 line of binos? I scored a 30% off MAP coupon for a vortex product and after seeing the work a pair of 5th group guys in my group did this weekend at Arena with their similar Sig Kilo3000s, I've got an inclination to work with that over a spotting scope.

Tempted to pick up the model with applied ballistics engrained, but considering the target wind entry is based on guesswork and the drop can be done with an index card, I'm leaning on saving the coin and going with the non-ab model.

    Thoughts?
