I noticed a little bit of corrosion around the positive terminal of the battery today. Is this the beginning of the end for this battery? It is 3 & 1/2 years old and has 52K miles. I'm curious about the experiences of others with higher mileage OEM batteries with regard to leaking/corrosion.

I have been giving each terminal a spritz of WD-40 every oil change for many years, they never seem to corrode.

My truck has the original battery (2017), it has only been disconnected 3 times and I haven't needed to clean any corrosion yet.

BTW: I don't find WD-40 useful for much however I keep a can exclusively for this purpose.

I have a 2021 that is about 3.5 years old as well, still with OEM battery, and have had corrosion that I have had to clean off a few times and it comes back. I don't know what it means.

I’ve had my truck since December of 18. It’s still on its original battery. I’ve had it cleaned once.

I just had corrosion in my positive battery connection and when I noticed it a day later the battery was dead. Keep an eye out on it.

sometimes corrosion is region-specific. me being dead center of the snow belt, i deal with a lot of corrosion issues the empire of california doesn't.

i've learned long ago to always clean, and dielectric grease battery terminals, or they're not likely to stay clean for more than a year. i also add the green/red donut rings in many auto parts store battery kits, but i'm not entirely convinced that they're anything more than a physical placebo.

Have had corrosion and have cleaned it off at least 5-7 times in the past 3 years.

rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.
corrosion can be attributed to a break in the case seal around the terminal. A result of rough handling.
Watch fluid levels else the battery will dry out.

Corrosion can be attributed environmental issues. WD40 has varnish in it that acts like a coat of...err.. well ..varnish.

    I use petroleum jelly.

There are very nice battery terminal cleaning brushes available for small money.
Baking soda dissolved in water neutralizes any surface acid.

    Keep 'em clean!

Mine was still working OK after 6 years but thinking I was on borrowed time I replaced it with an Interstate battery from Costco. I had a couple of big road trips this summer and didn’t want to take any chances while traveling. I had some corrosion after 2-3 years. Used one of the terminal brushes, coated both with dielectric grease, no more corrosion since then. Applied dielectric grease to the new battery when I installed it and no corrosion yet.

I used to use petroleum jelly, around 25 years ago I got tired of getting it on me and switched to the WD-40.
Varnish is as good a reason as any other, I don't know why it works, it just does. :notsure:

I noticed some of the green corrosion fuzz around the positive terminal this summer when I lifted the red terminal cover. Three year old battery. I cleaned it off, re-installed the cable clamp and coated the outside of the clamp and battery post tops with dielectric grease/compound. I left the green and red felt circles in place. Two months later the battery died. When I took the positive cable off to remove the battery and install the replacement, I spotted a small crack in the case of the old battery running outward from the positive battery post.

I installed new felt pads which the directions specified coating with the grease. (I don't think they really do anything) I also coated the outside of the clamps and the exposed parts of the battery terminals with same. Do not apply the grease to the battery terminals themselves or the inside of the cable clamps: It acts as an insulator: just lightly coat the exposed tops and the outer surfaces of the cable clamps.

Corrosion around the terminals is somewhat common. It doesn’t mean your battery is going bad. Just clean it up and apply some dielectric grease or some other battery terminal protector grease. You’re good to go.

The average lifespan of a flooded battery is 3-4 years, time to get a new one

There are vent slots on the battery that allow the acid to spill out, so corrosion in the vicinity battery can be expected.

    upload_2024-9-22_21-29-58.png

Watch for inner fender corrosion if the acid makes it that far.
