There are lots of posts about how happy people are with their freshly allied derp. There are far fewer where people report after having had it applied for many months or even years. If you have had the stuff on your truck for a long time please let us know how it has held up. Would be helpful if you included how long, the climate, whether you hand wash, if you offroad, how often its been touched up, etc.

    Thanks

I derp'd my emblems and lower bumper a year and a half ago. Haven't scratched it offroad but I run it through an auto car wash with brushes on a regular basis and it still looks as new as the day I sprayed it. Truck sits outside and gets covered in dirt almost every weekend. Pretty impressed with the durability.

I'm also interested in this info. Especially concerning our OR Rims.

Derped my emblems two years ago. Just started to see a couple of small breaks in the out corners of the letters. Easy application, although made me cringe spraying right onto the truck.

I've done the chrome window trim on my Subaru, the front grill and the ugly rear chrome strip on my wife's 08 4runner, and a couple sets of wheels, one set on a friend's Tacoma. All have been on for about a year. No issues as of yet.

It's okay for small projects like the ones mentioned. I wouldn't do anything big with it though. Like an entire truck. It just looks cheap.

My emblems have been dipped for about two years, the tailgate is fine but the doors are starting to wear through ok the edges of the letters. Would be a super easy touch-up and well worth the time and money. Maybe I should have done an extra coat initially, maybe it's using the brushes at carwashes, who knows. At te end of the day, it was easy, cheap, and very dependable.

I did the grill and rear bumper two years ago when I bought my truck. They both have held up very well with no touch ups. I'm in the Midwest so exposure to heat, humidity, freezing cold, snow, etc. I brush wash it at the local car wash, no special care where the derp is.

TRD OR wheels were done about 3 months ago. Too early to tell how well they will hold up.

Do you need to take your wheels off to do this? Will it create runs if the wheel isn't sitting flat on the ground?

I took mine off when i did it. I was rotating them anyway, taking them off made it easier to get them really clean and not have to worry about taping/covering anything. I used playing cards tucked in under the lip of the rim too. The one thing I didn't do, but wish I did, was remove the Toyota emblem in the middle before derping. I think I'd rather the logo not be black but oh well.

Agreed. It's great for small projects. I did all of my emblems including the front one. It's only been about 6 months, but they seem to be holdings up without issue. I've gotten it covered in mud and wheeled it multiple times. The front emblem looks great and I expected it get "peely" first. I always handwash though.

I would imagine if you did you entire hood or something, you'd get some aging or peeling. I think dipped wheels or entire body panels looks cheesy though.

I dipped a bath faucet just to see what it would look like. It's holding up well and it gets sprayed and cleaned with bathroom cleaner and a rag every week.

Dipped my emblems this past weekend. Good stuff, pretty easy overall. Thinking it will stand the test of time as the others here have pointed out.

I've had this on the door emblems also. I'm pretty sure it's from my pressure washing.

I've had my emblems and center caps on my wheels derped for over two years and they are still good. I wash the truck with a brush and give no special treatment on the derped parts. It you get any small spots showing through it's just as easy to apply another coat over it to touch it up.

Quick question how do the folks that dip their OR rims paint the Toyota symbol on the cap another color? Red for instance. Just wondering.

Pop the emblem out of the center cap by releasing the tabs on the back. Paint separately and reassemble. Some have had the tabs break and simply glued the emblems back onto the center cap.

Resurrection time! This is a good thread idea and deserves to be discussed, look at Dipyoucar.com as plastidip is here to stay for its ease of use and low cost. Does it look as good or last as long as painting or powder coating? No, but I could run down to Walmart at 3 am, throw some trash bags on my brakes and go to town and an hour or two later have different colored wheels all while only spending the same amount of money as a videogame or two. Paint and powder coating requires considerably more time and money to get the right result and is harder to correct.

    Report:
Plastidipped my OEM 16" TRD OR wheels anthracite grey in spring 2016, just removed it today, so a little over 3 years. Darker colors look okay from a distance but up close not so good. I off-road once and a while but when I do, I wheel until I'm stuck, so rock rash is inevitable. The first parts to rub off were the rim edge where the bead is which is because I have had a few tires replaced because of sidewall punctures so Discount Tire did rub off some while unmounting, mounting, removing weights and adding weights. I also never really wash my truck much, maybe once a month, and if I wash the wheels it's just with whatever soap I'm using on the paint (consumer-grade neutral pH Meguiars). I have used some pretty stiff brushes to scrub them and didn't harm them. I usually hand wash with a mitt and rinse with a garden hose, so no crazy pressure. I have tried some neutral wheel cleaners (Meguiars) on it at self serve car washes for quick washes and it didn't do anything.

    Notes:
I feel the plastidip at the very least hid the scratches and dings that were on the wheels before. The color I chose (anthracite grey) hid the brake dust and dirt well, lighter colors look worse when dirty. I dipped my wife's old oxidized Mazda3 wheels silver and brake dust immediately shows... I dipped my wheels on a windy day so I wasn't really pleased with the results, also I didn't need to spend the extra time taking my wheels off and dipping both sides of the wheels. The wheel wells are never seen and get dirty anyway so it wasn't worth it. The only benefit is maybe it protects them? Since my truck was used and the wheels were already beat up, I could care less. I tried to use glossifier to add gloss but I feel that was a waste of time and money. It didn't really add gloss, especially since the base coats were sprayed by an amateur (me) on a windy day. Even under ideal conditions, I don't think glossifier is that great of a product to give that glossy look that painted wheels look like, maybe in a paint booth by a pro plasti-dipper would it look great. A 2K clear would be a better option but costs more, so better prep and conditions would go a long way. I do wonder about how 2K clear affects durability of plastidip.

My main concern is longevity. Plastidip doesn't like to peel as easily when it's old. Maybe I didn't take care of it, like wash it properly and keep it in a garage all the time. Removing it after 3+ years wasn't fun until I found the right technique and products to make it easier.
