You're talking like a Howe rack or something right?

What's the deal with putting pressure to that rack? Do they make pumps that can be made to fit onto any engine?

 

I actually just replaced my rack and pump last night.

But yeah, I was looking into racks and pumps but didn't have money to throw down on a custom setup.

 

How bad was the rack? I've replaced the pump before, the rack looks like a PITA to get in there and disconnect the lines.

 

My rack was a PITA!

 

Any specific tools or techniques that would make it easier?

I spent the last two weeks on the road enjoying the truck, but the two weeks prior to that busting my knuckles on it. I don't feel like working on it, but I need to get in there and fix it.

 

Be careful with all the high pressure lines obviously, the skids had to come off, and i know the steering shaft was a tight fit. i actually didnt do mine, my buddy did but he was texting me while working on it saying it was a pain. He's a chrysler tech so it was his first Tacoma rack to replace


How are you liking the defined kit?

 

I like it a lot, I just need to add the extra leaves to get some ride height back. It handled great though. I had a lot of weight though so I could see how the guys who run around with empty beds would say it is stiff.

The lightest I had the bed was 15 gallons of fuel / water (120 pounds), plus the plate bumper and full size spare at the very end of the truck. Handled very well at that weight.

Heaviest I had it was all that, plus another 300-400 pounds in roof top tent, ice chest, rock climbing gear, etc. Had some bro lean going on but still handled well.

It carries weight pretty well, doesn't sag as much as stock would.

 

Yeah mine has 3 extra leafs in it now, un loaded its stiff, but tool box, and spare and gear it doesnt lose much height and rides good. i'm glad that kit worked out for you.

 

You buy defined's leaves to add in or did you go elsewhere?

 

No it was the HD pack and a company out here rebuilt them

Yuck.

Although it wouldn't be too hard to fix assuming the links are set up correctly. Remove the DB lift, reposition the bumps, put an appropriate spring on that coil and it would be a drastic improvement.

 

rack really wasnt bad at all.. that i thought was the easiest part. just un bolted my bumper and had all the room in the world to work on it. just took a 17mm to removed the driver and passanger side bolts, along with a 17mm for the lines, 12mm for the colt that attaches it to the column and then a little bit of luck sliding the rack out.

rack its self took me about 2 hours, the pump i got is where i found all my problems.

 

That's good to hear, I've done the pump before so I could probably knock out the whole thing in 5 hours or so. NAPA is ordering my replacement pump, covering it under warranty.

Thanks for the wrench sizes too, will pick up some flare wrenches for the lines.

edit - ah shoot I keep forgetting that you're a 2WD 4 cylinder. I bet it will be much more of a battle for me to get mine out.

 

check this out. pretty much what i followed. i had enough room so i didnt have to cut the driver side bolt 1/4 shorter. other than that, its pretty damn easy. most annoying part was having to unscrew the pressure lines an 8th turn at a time

edit: and i only went to step 5. my new rack came with bushings.
