They do eat a lot of parts.

Have someone sit in it and turn the wheel back and forth while you look for the slop. The bushings have a lot of play, and it could be in the shaft, but you will quickly find the problem.

Done that a lot. I feel like I'm constantly chasing the problem from part to part.

How much play should the rack have where the steering shaft meets it?

For some guys the build IS the attachment, meaning some just are into the building/fabbing of a vehicle & when they reach a point where they feel they're "done" with it , they find it easy to sell off just to start another project, thats what gets them off more than the driving believe it or not... I kinda get that.....

    Very true...

Probably the biggest reason right there...

On another note, this probably doesn't pertain to you but the condition you describe with the drifting/darting was exactly my issue once it turned out to be the LCA inner/rear bushing, but you're LT & no doubt have huge indestructable bushings... but ya never know....:notsure:

I wouldn't doubt it; I guess it's one more thin to do before buying another steering rack.

Get Delrin bushings if you decide to change them. Makes your truck handle like a Porsche on the street, super tight response, no slop, and they last longer. You do get a little more road feel in the wheel, so if you like numb steering stick with poly bushings.

I had a bushing come loose at the rag joint right at the firewall. Gave me a lot of play in the steering wheel. There is a cover over the rag joint at the firewall, I took that off and found the loose bushing inside the joint on the shaft, popped it back on and it's been fine ever since.

Are you talking about that really small bushing? Mine came off once too, such a pain to get back on! It have some ridiculous amounts of slop though.

I bought my truck in '06, sold it this past nov of '13. So I had it roughly 7 years. Never thought I'd have sold it. Not the first truck I built myself but the first truck that was pretty much built 100% myself and virtually actually DONE in my eyes at least!!! It was super fun and worked great. But then the opportunity to step into something I'd always wanted and dreamed of building popped up so I listed mine. I figured if it sold, sweet, I'd step into the new project. If it didn't sell, no biggie, I'll keep it and move on and keep having fun with it. Well... It sold... If I don't count my personal labor as value, I basically broke even on it. The truck I replaced it with... Most of it, or well, the entire drivetrain and chassis at least is brand new and I picked it up for less then half of what's into it so far and it hasn't even seen dirt yet. Heck, I'm going to have to break in the factory new motor even still once I get it fired up!

Point being, I never thought I'd part with my truck yet... I did... And I have no regrets. Everyone that's seen what's sitting in my garage has been pretty impressed with what I'm working with.

Yeah, I had MANY people tell me when I sold it to Nick that I would see it up for sale in less then a year again cause that guy I guess just never holds onto vehicles. I think it looks about a million times better in that blue for sure! It's going to probably be a hard sell for him cause there's no way it's going to pass Cali smog. I had it registered in Az and he does as well. I bet he'll have to find someone that wants to make it a trailer-ed rig probably or another out of state sale.

On the other hand, I have about 10 minutes of work left to do tonight and then my cab fab work will be buttoned up and finalized on the new ride. Have about another 10 minutes of work on top of that and basically all the welding on my truck should be done. Next up will be reworking the steering, plumbing and fluids (ouch!) and then strip the current engine harness out and get a new one purchased and routed/installed and start wiring up the dash, console, lights, etc... Once all that's done I'll have the harness guy come by and be there when I fire it. At that point I'll probably be really close to getting my shocks picked up if not already. Slap those on, mount the fiberglass and get it out for a driveshaft and exhaust and then game on!!! YIKES!!!

Not gonna lie, I'm kinda jonesing to get the shocks picked up!!! Will be nice to have those in my possession considering the retail value on them is more then my yota sold for and not much less then I paid for this whole truck!!! Stupid hobby we have honestly! LOL
