2500$ = new plasma, new welder, compressor, accessories, and the metal to do it with hahaha if he doesn't do stuff himself now would be a good time to start

actually i have, seeing as i own everything but the plasma and i'm at maybe 1500 invested, including mask tank and wire. I used a great plasma all weekend that costs 500$ and was cutting 1/4" cold rolled like butter. you don't need snapon everything to do a good job, although it sure makes it easier.

jk idk what i'm talking about pay someone 2500-3500 to cut off and weld on 8 tabs and a shock hoop :bananadead:

do what u want but i'd rather invest in myself, learn more about my truck and learn a ton of new skills in the process, ending up with a built truck and a garage full of parts to build whatever else i could possibly want

    but i'm weird

I'd rather save money and do it myself and then have all the tools and knowledge for next time..

I guess. There's nothing shameful about a millermatic 190. Hell I've built everything I've ever welded with a hobart 180 and a millermatic 185. Also nothing shameful about a 26 gallon craftsman compressor. And that Lotos is the bee's knees in the budget plasma world. Don't need a hypertherm to cut off 12 gauge.

This exactly. I never pass up an opportunity to learn more about my truck and do work my self.

Ok. So Millermatic 211 for $1400. Which is completely overkill for the hobbiest (not someone going to trade school to be a welder). Nobody is going to hit the duty cycle on .120 wall with a 190.

And FWIW, I got my powermax 65 for $1300 on craigslist...and that cuts up to 1" plate.

ATO front skid (need more but icon's might fail if I hang anything else from my truck) All-Pro front bumper thanks to a good deal here and a pesky encounter with a rock or 20, total chaos uppers.
Kind of embarrassing to admit but it's cheeper for me to pay and have it done right than try it myself... Also when I broke down how many hours it would take me I'm better off picking up a few shifts at work and covering the labor that way.

Yep...just like assholes, everyone has one.

That's why I said the Lotos to start with. Sub $400 and it will do anything the hobbiest needs. Only reason I got the hypertherm was because of the deal.

But back to Shawn's previous point, 2500 is more than enough to be equipped as a weekend hobbiest (not a fabricator by trade). Craftsman, Lotos and a 190 will only set you back $1600.

You make a good point but my garage is already filled with boards and studio equipment... Plus I've tried to weld multiple times and it's not pretty for sure. Had a few maintaince guys at work try to teach me and they sent me back to the control room...

Thats for a huge duty cycle welder that like he said, is completely overkill for anything that someone is going to be doing on a prerunner. Plus, 2700, an extraordinarily upper end of the scale estimate, is still 800 less than 3500 (another upper end of the scale estimate). 800 will buy you lots of squares and clamps lol. To say that you couldn't get a good (even great) setup for that much is kinda silly, especially if you consider the used market.

The point that he's trying to make is making your own stuff is less expensive, more rewarding, and gives you a better understanding of the vehicle that most people plan on taking into the middle of nowhere. Plus these builds snowball... a front kit install is just the beginning.

I taught myself with the interwebz and texting back and forth with landon on here. there's always so much more to learn and thats something i like about it, but its soooo rewarding laying down a solid bead on your own truck, then beating on it the next day!

Well i know most of the stuff welded to the frame is wire but I'm limited to stick. What are your guys thoughts on running stick on bed cage work and frame work.
