Hmm interesting thanks for the heads up. When I asked for one I was told by the first place I called the they couldn't sell anything within the emissions system. I need that canister...have the dreaded 5 error code thing. I have an 06' and there was a design flaw with the canister that allows the solenoid to get flooded with gas. Supposedly they fixed it in later models and there was even a recall for it which of course I missed.

If you find the right pendejo at the right junkyard, they'll sell you their sister for the right amount of money. You can still get all that shit at the junk yards its just they might turn you away at first but in the end it's easier just to figure something else out. See if you can find someone parting out a truck on Craigslist or something.

@Evenflow So there is a difference between federal and cali charcoal canisters? I thought it was only cats that where different.

Nope, it appears there is no difference in that part and that it is not included in the laws...me thinks I just got an overly cautious junkyard employee on the phone. My understanding is that OE the cats are not any different either, all of the trucks are made 50 state compliant with all of the same parts.

Where we get f'd in CA is with the use of aftermarket less expensive replacement cats for the 4.0...can't do it - have a cat go bad and you have to buy a whole new exhaust manifold from Toyota for $1100...it is total bullshit because the aftermarket stuff will " sniff " just as clean but as of Jan 2015 CA no longer sniffs it is all ODB and visual inspection of all emissions components. The inspector pulls up a page with all of the OE numbers that should be stamped on the items and then goes and visually inspects for those items w/ the stamped #'s. Same goes for intakes now, you have to have a CARB certified intake with the appropriate label attached.

Yup they do and the exhaust shops have to use the CARB site now too. I went to a shop a few months ago to look at options and the first thing he did is walk me over to the PC on his work bench in the shop and pull up the CARB site " sorry can't touch it - no aftermarket part #'s for your truck ".

I am not sure of exactly what year models etc the laws are applicable too.

The CARB site is pretty easy to follow : http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/devices/amquery.php
There is a " data base page " you click on and select your vehicle and it tells you all CARB certified items for your rig. Magnaflow X site changed last year too, there is nothing listed for the 4.0 when you select the CA catalog.

The guy at the shop I went to said folks did not take it too seriously at first and the state did a " sting " and handed out some large fines to shops and even pulled licenses to do state inspections.

OH wow, how Cali emissions changed. Two years ago I had to buy Cali cats for my 2.7 here in colorado because the truck still was considered a Cali emissions truck. Not anymore tho. Im now just under federal emissions with the engine swap.

Yea this is about right. I called an exhaust shop to have my DT shorties installed and he kept saying if they're not carb legal, no one will touch them, after I told him multiple times they are. Plan is to swap out intake and Y pipe when its CARB time.

In Michigan we can do what we want to our trucks but it was 19 and snowy today. So there are definitely trade offs.

I know supermoto guys register their bikes in SD. Not sure if you can do a truck/passeneger vehicle but it may be something to look into

Motorcycles have a bunch of loop holes. It is a bit more stricter on trucks. I just passed smog last month so I'll just keep my stock parts in a a box for 2 years.

find a friend w/ and address and "rent" a room from them. used to work in a bike shop in ca and had several customers with property in az that would let friends register dirt bikes there so that they could get plated
