An 18" spring is really long, if you have an 8" coil over you only need a 16" spring.

On a 6 lug second gen 4x4 V6 dbl cab a 600 lb coil is standard for a long travel kit BUT the geometry of your suspension and even the coil bucket are completely different so I don't know what your leverage ratio is by comparison ? Simple logic says that if your 500 lb spring needs 2" of pre load to hold the truck up then the spring is too light. On a second gen stepping up 50 lbs of spring rate accommodates 120 lbs...but again your sh*t is completely different. You might want to see if anyone has a set of 550's you can try out first, it would suck to jump up to a 600 and find out that it rides like a brick...

yup understood but will a spring that goes all of the way up hit your resi hose fitting and also put the adjustment collar up too high behind shit that you can't get the tool in there to be able to adjust them on the truck ? I made that mistake with my last kit, put a taller spring on just for looks and then I could only turn my collar about an inch because of the fittings etc.

edit - i mean an inch laterally IE: so it took like eight 1/8 turns to move it one thread on the shock body = PITA

5 lugs kits typically kick the coilover out a lot farther than a 6 lug. My top hat threads down about 4" to set my ride height with flat spring spring plates. I am running dual rate springs on a 10" CO.

You make me wonder what I'm running. It is a royal pain to adjust preload on my truck.

    Vehicle Specs:

    Lift: 4"

    Wheel Travel: 13"

Sug. Wheel Size: 15x7 3.75” B.S. (Caliper clearance required)

    Sug. Tire Size: 31” or 33” X 10.5 or 12.5

TOTAL CHAOS releases the first performance long travel suspension system for your 2wd

5 lug 2005+ Tacoma truck. After logging close to 500 off road miles on this system it is now available! 3.5” extended upper and lower control arms are built using 4130 chromoly tubing and were designed to eliminate the factory ball joints. The arms incorporate 1” Teflon lined uniballs for maximum strength and wheel travel. The kit cycles 13” of travel and is designed to bolt into the factory upper and lower control arm mounting locations and coil bucket. TC supplies a bolt on billet upper shock mount that is intended to utilize an 8” travel 2.5” diameter Fox coil over shock (PT# 980-99-246B) with external reservoir. 16” 600 lb coil springs MUST be installed with this system. Sway A Way intended shock systems require TC kit PT# 88000S and must be specified at the time of order. SAW systems include a welded boss style upper shock mount and will require installing SAW (PT# 56000-108 8” 2.5 diameter coilover with 90 degree res. fitting & 56107-100 single rate coil over hardware kit). Limit straps with adjustable clevis’ are included in the kit. These allow you to adjust the limit straps after they have stretched to eliminate any bind at full droop. TC includes an extended heim joint tie rod steering upgrade that replaces the factory outer tie-rod ends and uses a ¾” Teflon lined heim joint for max strength and travel. Weld on upper coil bucket gussets are also included in Fox packages to add strength to the upper shock mount. Some cutting and grinding is necessary for installation. The TOTAL CHAOS long travel system comes complete and includes urethane bushings & inner sleeves, hi mis alignment spacers, grade 8 hardware, uniball’s and heims, DOT extended brake lines as well as powder coat and an additional clear coat.

that what they had to say about it but i have kings

Sometimes people are confusing what pre load means. Pre load is NOT the amount of threads showing above the spring, it could be but that is not how its measured. Pre load is how much the spring is compressed at full droop of your suspension. NOT full droop of the shock, and not at ride height. What you do is full droop the suspension and fully undo the spring collar so there is no tension on the spring. With some springs it may end up level with the top thread of the shock, but some may be below the top and some may still be compressed even with suspension at full droop. If you need a spring compressor to install your springs then the amount you compressed to install will most likely be part of pre load. But just because you have "x" amount of threads showing does not necessarily mean that is your preload. Most of us have the same truck and suspension setups so I understand threads as a way to compare but that is not how to accurately measure preload

The way my shocks are setup the springs are not compressed at all when the shock is fully extended off the truck. That does not mean I have zero preload. Once I install my shocks in my front arms and connect the limit straps it compresses the shock a little and THAT is where you measure preload. Its the load on the spring when your suspension is at full droop

Yes! Very few get this, a 600lb spring with 2" of preload has 1200lbs of preload to hold the weight, spring length does not matter on a constant rate spring. What happens is people are using a spring compressor to install a longer spring. That still counts as preload once installed

right but with 2'' of preload thats a lot of weight(force from the coil) up front for his truck, which explains why he is so nose high. IDK about you..but I like down travel as much as up travel.

Plus putting and 18'' coil on a 8'' coilover with that much pre load might make the coil block out. He does have flat bottoms now he said so he is probably fine though.

    I'm running a 10" and 12" 500. A bit too low of a spring rate for my truck. I should be running a 500 over 600 now.
