There's nothing wrong with a properly set up 3 link when it's done with other goals in mind.

People on here talk like someone with a 7k+ lbs Tacoma is trying to finish first in the baja1000.

There's nothing wrong with setting up a rear suspension for some more travel, smooth ride, and good load carrying capability.

Yah that all makes sense and was my plan but the thread had me considering any and all options. Besides a bunch of tuning the custom pack from deaver is the last piece I haven’t acquired yet. The rest is in or injure garage so makes sense to run with that for now.

@kasnerd def it would be 4 if I went down that rabbit hole. He had a nice rig and seen it in person a few times. I had move a few ideas from it. I believe he 3 linked it instead of 4. Not sure why. But for reason you noted 4 would be my choice even with my limited LT knowledge.

I gotta give it to Harry when he said there’s no point in 4 linking a 6 cyl truck unless you’re all diy - you’re gonna shovel money into a completely depreciating, underpowered, small, expensive abs hard to source parts for vehicle.

I think it's mostly for keeping hardware out of the bed area. 3links are for front axles.

Biggest reason for a 3 link is keeping the stock location for the gas tank.

I’ve seen it too - packaging and weight distribution wise though it’s much better to put it behind the rear axle and then no reason to 3 link.

Dude just fucking stop it, you don’t know the full story with my truck and you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about. I don’t regret my 3 link for a minute.

First you can’t 4 link and daily it in CA unless you have a reliable work around for inspection / registration. The gas tank itself is considered part of the emissions system so you can not ditch the oe tank. That may not matter for trailer queens like you but some of us need a 100% daily driver.

Second, the axle side to side movement is not just at droop it is through the entire range of motion but the movement can be as little as 1/2” - 3/4” with a level panhard at ride height. You can’t even feel it after a day of driving one.

Third and this is where you really show your lack of knowledge- a 3 link is not heavier than a 4 link it has the same amount of links just in a different configuration. A 3 link has two lower links, one upper link and a panhard bar which is 4 components. A 4 link has two lower links and two upper links which is 4 components = same f’n thing.

To be clear the only problem I have with my truck is the 1st iteration of the second gen frame which flexes pretty bad. The frame was updated 3 times through the second gen run and I have the earliest noodle version. My only current problem is that the whole back end is boxed and X membered and now that Harry has stiffened the hell out of the front end that leaves the weak point in the middle of the frame which is flexing too much.

It doesn’t have a fucking thing to do with the 3 link rear end or any added weight - we actually removed weight from the rear of the truck we did not add weight and the frame flex was a fraction of what it is now before the front end got turned into a rock.

Lastly, you don’t need to back half a truck to link one there are plenty of well built well performing linked trucks on oe frames. You just have to resolve the frame flex issues which I am currently doing by boxing the rest of the frame so it doesn’t wiggle like a noodle.

Your truck has the same fkn problem just not as bad YET because you haven’t boxed and plated any of it yet leaving a single weak point. All-tacos have the same problem to one degree or another you can drive one off the dealer lot bone stock and look over at the passenger seat back shaking put a gopro under that bitch and and you will see the frame from the tank forward wiggling.

no, it’s because legally in 99% of CA counties you can not pass inspection without the oe tank.

Quotes for the double edit and to get away from the feuding in here.

Did I mention tuning? Lots of tuning to make things work. Since I said it was “finished” yesterday, I’ve already been back out this morning to turn a few bypass tubes. Fresh shocks were a little more stiff than they were before. Front needed it so it is good I think, but rear was back to being a little stiff and needed compression tubes opened up a bit. Just take notes for what you have and what you’ve done so you can always go back if you need to

that’s a good point didn’t think if the gas tank. That would def kill some use of it’s not a dedicated trail truck. We’ll no linking in my immediate future at least not with this truck.

not true. you can use a CARB tank and be fine. JD has a tank upgrade using a smog legal donor tank from a bronco that is going into my truck. 33gal.

You’re wrong, the bronco tank is carb certified for the bronco it belongs in but not for any other vehicle. You need to look into it yourself, just go to a smog station and ask them to pull up the list of carb approved aftermarket items for your truck…it’s a really short list of a few cold air intakes and a couple of cats.
