Should watch my gopro video from last summer...similar shot but you could see my alternator on my LS visibly shifting like.....alot.......didn't think anything of it till i was driving it on the street and when i accelerated the shifter would shift like 3 inches side to side.....turns out like 2 of my 8 engine mount bolts where gone and 2 more where almost falling out.....apparently i forgot to tighten them the last time i had the engine out....last time i will forget to do that....luckily didn't break anything.

My doors are the only stock things left besides the headlights
The tacoma racks like someone posted are two piece housings...they flex, and with the backlash they have already out of the box...they can skip a tooth...everytime that happens there's definitely damage happening to the pinion teeth lol.
Its worth tightening that guide bushing up enough to remove alot of that slop but not bind.

JD slide rack displaces that jarring force some into the slide rather than the rack.

Tundra rack, gears are much larger and the housing is one piece aluminum not two piece. And the backlash is set to a closer tolerance.

I've been super happy with my tundra rack from you, especially now that i have a 1200psi psc pump running on it.

In hindsight he realized it was a bad idea to try and accelerate up that rock. He just wasn’t thinking. Watch his right hand too, it absolutely slams into the door.

Oof. Gopros are great for catching things like that in the front end. Really puts into perspective how much everything moves around on these trucks when offroading them.

Dang. I've bumped up things before similar to that, but I'm sure the big ole' meats he has on that rig isn't doing his steering rack any favors either.
I've definitely learned that slow and steady can get you pretty damn far most of the time (although that doesn't get you that far in wet ass conditions like that). That and knowing when to admit defeat and just winch or get a tug.

That's what we were saying, we were surprised that the rack failed like that from something relatively mild, compared to some of the other abuse it sees. We all thought something else would have failed first, like a bent spindle or something. Oh well, not a big deal considering I towed my truck there so I towed him home and he drove my truck.

Ya that's weird. Usually you bend an ITR before anything like that happens. At least that's what happened to me most everytime something in my steering has been thrown out of wack.

I'm sure navigating that thing off trail was fun with his toe being all sorts of fucked up haha

IMO the quality and knowledge is lacking with him, which is the main reason I went DMZ. I don't like that he chops up the factory mount on one side, or the fact he tells people a trans mount isn't necessary. Just opinion, but its the reason I chose to give Tim my money.

A friend did the same thing ramming into a big g-out - where the rack casing is pressed together. More than a few prerunner guys have went swing steer but not any upgrades for 4x4 other than another rack slider that I've seen. A couple shops build them but not from a jig and they're nowhere near NorCal unfortunately.

@906taco combined with @tetten provided good information on how a rack would fail and specific details about how to identify potential tooth skipping based on how steering wheel angles can be correlated. Without @Tacomoto23 identifying just how far his steering wheel comes back from trips off-center it's not possible to tell. I hope he read what else was said later in the discussion.

Like @Basikbiker was saying there's most likely always pinion damage if a rack skips a tooth - and this seems to make a lot of sense with what I was thinking considering @906taco complains if it happening all the time vs. some guys bashing their trucks for a long time without having that happen even once. Once it happens it increases the likelihood of continual instances once the pinion is shorn. That's what I had been hypothesizing while thinking about the earlier posts this weekend.

Given the time and resources I'd like to build a rig designed to apply loads in various directions and pop a torque wrench on a rag joint to see just how much force it takes with deflection from various input angles and locations along the ram on each side - with the rack being asymmetric and also secured with bolts to the frame it's likely one input source for load is going to cause it to possibly skip a tooth more than any other.

Anyway, good job @Supra4x4 - looking good man!
