Why did MDR choose to use locked out frequencies for their race communications?

A lot of the 150mhz range belongs to LE; granted most larger agencies these days are using frequency hopping.

You need to install it MAtt! Time passes by real fast on my way to Barstow or Ocotillo. Dirty Jokes and laughter gets things lively! and were usually talking shit about that guy who doesnt have a radio :p

I dont think MDR chose anything. I believe you can use HAM freqs or even CB if you wanted to. Its just the race freqs have been in the 150 range.

For example, if you go to PCI Race Radios and buy a legitimate "race radio", you will only be able to switch to "race freqs/channels". IE: on your radio screen you will just see "BFG" as opposed to the actual freq "153.395"

This is where I believe HAM radios have an advantage (well along with their cheaper price tag). When you have a modded HAM radio you can just press #'s to the desired freq. If your group is using "Yokohama 153.110" all you have to do is put in the numbers. If your "race radio" doesnt have "Yokohama" (like the above picture) you cant communicate with your group. You have to go to Long Beach and have PCI program "Yokohama" into your radio.

Also if im stranded in the desert I can get on the HAM freqs and call out for help and hope one of these old fart HAM radio guys are listening to save my ass. Cant do that with a race radio, less of a chance being heard on a McMillin freq than a HAM freq.

Disadvantage of a modded HAM. I believe with modding the radio you have more of a chance of it "breaking" i guess. My buddy had a IC208H, after a year it just started acting wierd and then it wouldnt turn on LOL

Also if you are on a race team and chase/pit you might "bleed" into other frequencies using a modified HAM radio. Im sure other race teams will not enjoy your conversations when they are trying to communicate with their driver or pit.

    Kinda stock

I practically pulled off clear coat and ripped off the bottom magnet backing, it pretty much permanent without having to drill a hole through the cab. Haven't used my cb since adding a race radio.
