most shims are proprietary also, fox wont interchange with king,SAW, Bilstein and vice versa.... but on the other hand FOA shims will work on king 2.5 shocks and SAW 3.0.

Didn't know that, so the SAW's wall-thickness of their 3.0's must be huge or Kings is thin (which I don't see being the case):notsure:

wall thickness of the shocks body isnt affecting the shims in any way your thinking of the shocks piston? SAW's 3.0 series, King's, and FOA's shims all have the same ID. SAW 3.0 series, king, and FOA shims have an ID of .625

Now that we're getting into pro rebuilds; who runs custom shim stacks on their bump stops..? :D

anyone had DSM valve their shocks? buying from them because they seem to have the best prices. we all know they have good service, but you never hear reviews on their custom valving ability. i'm sure they'll ask for shock mounting angle, spring pack and weight of the rear of the truck kind of stuff. i've just never heard how well their custom valving comes out without being there for them to see or ride in the truck.

You're going to have to find someone to ride in your truck and do the valving on site, that's all it boils down to.

The better question is what is the rate for them to go out and tune with you? I'm guessing in the neighborhood of $100+ an hour?

i have a boatload of extra weight in the back of my truck when i wheel because most trip last multiple days. some even a week, so i have to cary a lot of water, evtra food, medical supplies, spare parts, recovery gear, welder, and the list goes on. i'd assume when i tell them it's for an 07 tacoma double cab, they have an idea of what that means valving wise, but with all of the extra weight, the calving will have to be adjusted acordingly.

i'm east coast, so i'll have to have them do their best via information over the phone, and then revalve them myself once they arrive if they are too far off for the bypass adjustments to compensate for.

Colin, it sounds like you're not going fast enough for what (performance) shocks are made for. Most people don't realize that shocks work well when they're at a hot temperature. Depending on what you're doing you need to put this into consideration.. The hotter the shocks the thinner the fluid. So if you're moving at a slow pace then you may want to order a smaller shim stack to allow the thicker fluid to run through them.

I can go on for a while but just to clarify these things, it's good to make sure you know some of the minor things.

45-65mph when we aren't doing the technical stuff. i'd go faster, but that's when the rear starts bucking 2-3 feet in the air. no bueno.

So at those speeds are the shocks working hard (whoops) or just little bumps?

with all that weight in the bed id be more worried about the springs than the valving of the shock. valving is just dealing with movement of the shaft ie: postion of the piston inside the shock body(specificly for bypass shocks) and the speed of the shaft. dont get me wrong valving will help in the bumps at speed but you need to be able to support all that extra weight first. F55's, F67's and that allpro 50t pack arent gunna cut it all these spring under leaf packs are super flexyy. Get a custom leaf pack like this guy did.
