I spend a lot of time in remote areas; and pretty much anyone you run into out there is armed (hunters and/or rednecks). A lot of them think they own the national forest, or that they get to decide what is and what isn't an allowable activity.

I've been followed off dirt roads before and threatened with a baseball bat over "the forest isn't for driving fast, it's for hunting and stuff". By the way, I was armed (concealed). Elmer fudd never brought the bat up so he walked away that day not knowing how close he came to getting shot.

For social purposes, a carbine is a far more versatile and effective weapon than anything else.

Firearms, particularly handguns, are not the instant death rays that TV/video games makes them out to be. Rifles bring a lot more kinetic energy to the table and can stop a threat much faster, though a lot wider variety of circumstances (barriers, distance, body armor, etc.).

Wow, a baseball bat? And you were carrying?! That could have gotten interesting..

Why are you in remote area's? If you dont mind me asking.

Ever had to pull the handgun out?

I have never drawn down on someone while CCW. I hope I never have to, but you know what they say, hope for the best prepare for the worst. I have drawn down on a few occasions on duty. I avoid confrontation at all cost when CCW, but if you give me no other option I will protect myself.

Yes, he "lectured" me for a minute, I told him to go fuck himself and that he didn't want what he was asking for, and we parted ways.

I'm in remote areas to go offroading/exploring.

    +1 for you.
I feel the exact same way. I carry anywhere I legally can, and so far it's stayed holstered.
