Haha, I’ve always been around rock crawling but it’s never peaked my interest as much as LT set ups. The problem is my whole family loves rock crawling and 4x4’s and I don’t want to be stuck at the bottom of a mountain. I used to camp at airport flats near on of the entrances of the Rubicon, so I know there’s some great places for 4x4’s. I’m just not from the mountains and won’t be able to get to places I need to without a 4x4.

Well it sounds like you may need a 4x4 if they are doing extreme rock crawling. Granted keep in mind that with enough skill and a rear locker you can do plenty in a 2wd, especially with LT

another fun spot for you to check out for go fast stuff is California City

To everybody commenting, I appreciate the replies! I’m definitely new to the community and just want to see my options! I just want something special and have no problem investing a lot of time into this project. I don’t expect it to be done anytime soon but once it is, I’ll be sure to show the results!

That’s about an hour away I’ll definitely look into it. With everyone getting older it’s less about rock crawling and more about being able to get to our property up North and having a good time. Everyone has a 4x4 but their mostly for show. They’re not built for extreme crawling anymore which is why I thought I could get away with a LT set up.

Not sure if you seen some other posts but I’m definitely up for trying to design something and build it myself with family. Hopefully that will make it less of a money pit if I’m not spending 5K+ on a basic LT kit.

    Also in California.
    I use 4 wheel drive a lot.
I’ll never own a non 4 wheel drive vehicle while living here.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

Lol... I get it. (just to make sure we're clear, just givin ya a bit of shit earlier).

As for your delima... it's really not a delima. You seem to think you don't know if you want to go LT and have it make you have problems if you need 4wd... and you don't want to go 4wd and have it cause problems when you're bombing down roads like a "Pre-runner."

So let me just help you out with that...

LT is not going to cause any problems for you when crawling, in fact it would probably help... because you have more travel and you can run larger tires.

4wd is not going to hurt you when you are bombing down the fire roads using your long travel...

So... the answer is you need both. Especially if you have family/friends that 4wd and you "don't want to be stuck at the bottom of the mountain."

I was in a very similar situation you're in right now a couple years ago. My truck was a 2wd Prerunner. Like I said in an earlier post. 4wd was last year for me, this year is the big suspension upgrade, next year will be re-gear. I'm more in to the rock crawling/trail blazing and the way I have my truck set up, it would be a HUGE deal to make glass fenders work, so I'm pretty sure I will not do long travel. But that's not because LT is bad for 4wd... it's because I would have to completely rebuild my rack system in the bed, my storage boxes, my rear bumper (possibly)... and I would have to figure out a way to make my snorkle fit into glass fenders (it has been done, but it's a pain in the ass)

But... in short... you need LT and 4wd... I'd start with 4wd.

Like Matt said above, sounds like you need both. And trust us, long travel is always a money pit.... but it’s oh so good!

I was in the same position, go 4wd first and if you end up wanting to do go fast stuff then start down the LT rabbit hole
