Im a few days/weeks out from buying a new tacoma off road and cant decide on a long bed or manual. I had my heart set on a longbed but really like being in control with a manual and the manual's are cheaper. I have found several around the country, nothing local of course. I have a friend that works at headquarters and can get me some kind of deal after i find the truck i want. So what do ya'll say? I know there will be die hard manual guys and die hard longbed guys but i want opinions either way. Is the mpg really that much lower in a manual?

I wanted an Off Road Manual, so the only choice was the DCSB but it was worth it.

Do you need the double cab? Access Cab has proven very usable for me at least, and you get both options you want. Longbed and manual. Buy the sport, swap out the shocks, replace the bedside sticker and add an air locker. Boom! MT Offroad with longbed!

I bought 2nd gen DCLB... I miss driving a stick every day (my prior two vehicles were an 05 Subaru Legacy GT stick and then a 01 Tacoma ext cab stick, plus my fun car a Datsun 510 is a stick)... but I needed 4 doors and a "full" back seat and couldn't do a shot bed. Went for the 4 doors with a 6ft bed and gave up on the stick. As I said most days I miss the stick, every once in a while I love the auto for traffic.

Have you driven both? The DCLBs are longgg. Its only 20-24" or something like that but I need 4 full lanes to pull a U turn, and find myself backing into parking spots pretty often since its easier.

Drive em both an decide. Its a tough call, you just need to decide what you need/prefer most. For me it was 6ft bed #1, passenger space #2 and Manual #3 so the Manual lost out... if this auto trans ever goes though... Manual swap!!!

You can always get a bed extender or a roof rack, they help with having the short bed.

If you need a double cab, GET the manual over a long bed. I say this because the manual is geared GREAT for towing. Get yourself a trailer if you plan on moving around a bunch of stuff. Bed length doesn't matter then!

If ur hauling a lot of stuff go for longbed, if not then DCSB for extra passenger.

having come from a manual as my daily driver for the better half of a decade, I don't miss manual at all. plus when on a gravelly uphill offroad trail--not even a particularly hard one for most of you guys on here--i thank my lucky stars once again that i got an auto. i vote dclb auto.

With that traffic I would opt for the long bed.

I have a 9 year old son so i really need a double cab. I will probably just have a ladder in the bed but i will need a ladder rack either way. I really like the looks of the long bed over short and the extra foot never hurt. Im coming from a ram 2500 cummins, so either one will be a big change to what im used too. Whats the deal with the mpg difference? Is it overall gearing or just these new autos are that much better? What are real world mpg's with both? I am in the dallas/fort worth area so i will be in traffic but moslty try to avoid high traffic times.

Overdrive in the autos is something like 0.69 in 5th and 0.55 in 6th. Rear end is 3.73.

In the manual 5th is 0.85 and 0.73 in 6th. I THINK the rear end is like 4.23...?

Don't shy away from the manual due to traffic. Let the clutch out and it'll roll... easy to drive in a traffic jam.

In the manual you'll turn 2000rpm at 60 in 6th. This is the low end of the powerband. No need to downshift... push the gas and it'll climb. Anything below 2000 it'll seem to stutter. At 75 you're going 2500-2600... at 80 you're doing 2750... going into a wind you'll get 15 to 16 mpg.
