Look what dealer charges got MT fluid change

I did this yesterday for the cost of 2 qts of Amsoil GL5 MT

$28 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90. Starting at $149.95. Sooooo glad I can do this stuff myself.

 

I'm glad to be mechanically inclined as well, lots of people don't know anything about anything to do with maintaining a car themselves

 

Which is why stealership shops stay in business.

 

It's true. Some people just aren't inclined in anyway to maintain their own vehicles. Believe me, I've worked at a dealer for 18 years.....
That being said, I don't think I spent that much when I changed both diffs and trans to Redline.....

 

Thats a ton of money for wrenching off a drain and fill plug. Pretty much easier than oil change

 

Doesn't seem out of line honestly. After I bought the oil and new crush washers that's about what I'd charge for my time.

I'd never pay the dealer that much to do it but they got overhead.

 

I understand that. Even if you pay 40 for fluid and they charge 140 an hour (half hour job maybe) plus tax and fees and blah

If I couldn't do the work myself I'm sure most people have a friend or family member that could help. Its very easy on a manual transmission (im sure you know because you have one). Im lucky enough to have a bit of saving but there is no way I'd pay that especially at the dealership near me because they suck. Unfortunately I've been out of work at my normal job since March due to... you know. Thankfully I had alittle saved but don't want to drain it paying that fee.

 

Agree 300%. I changed mine at 10k, a couple months back. I'm completely on board with not paying the dealer to do anything. But if I owned a dealership, I wouldn't lose sleep charging that, because I'd be paying my techs a living wage, insuring them and my facility, covering your seat and floor mats, disinfecting your vehicle afterward, and hopefully making a little loot myself.

Agree with you. Glad that I am able to do 90% of my own work.

 

This is a good reason to find a trusted local independent shop, for those not inclined to do their own wrenching. I see that dealer price as not completely out of line, considering over-head involved. I'd expect an independent to about half that price, or better.

 

Natetroknot is 100 per cent correct....add workers comp. matching social security, payroll taxes, vacation ,medical insurance,401k, rent, heat, electric insurance and pay plus cashiers etc, They have to charge what they do. If you dont like it , fix it yourself.

My take: if you can do it yourself, go for it! If you can't do it yourself, find a good shop that can take care of your vehicle. It really is that simple.

For those who want to do their own maintenance, YouTube is your friend. Wish that was around when I was a kid. I was stuck with those crappy Chilton's (and other) manuals that covered 40 years of a particular vehicle...lol

 

I agree with "That One Old Guy". I'm getting up there myself, too inflexible physically to get under there for much more than oil & filter changes, which I still do myself. Last week my independent charged me 300 and change to do the transfer case, manual tranny, and both diffs. I've had the truck for 7 years, so that's what, seven cents a day or something. I'm good with that. Let's hear it for the independents -- the good ones anyway.

 

congrats you can open and close a drain plug

dealership is in business to repair cars under warranty paid by manufacturer
and as last resort for big repairs most people cannot do
with expensive factory special tools
like an engine rebuild

if you don't want to go there, you don't have to

if you drove to my house and sat for 1 hour asking me to spoon feed you popcorn,
I'd probably charge you $150 minimum
