    back to bone stock.
i just bought the exact same truck. i will use a Boondox bed extender to hold the kayak, so it is a non issue.

i tried to find an access-cab, but that wasnt gonna happen. i still have my 2006 and still drive it. 2000 off MSRP is fantastic. i didnt get that.

Jeesh. Looking at this deal, the only thing missing is them making you wash it yourself before driving off their lot. Yet this markup is only a minor tune up compared to what dealers are going to do to all of those eager Gen4 buyers.

Dealers do it exactly because people are obviously out there paying it. Can’t blame the alligator for biting your hand off if you choose pet him on the nose. It’s important to walk away from this kind of stuff b/c there is always a better offer on the same truck somewhere else.

@Steves55, don’t reward bad dealerships. I did a search and there are several dealers in Oregon who have TRD OR for $2,000-3,000 off legit MSRP. You’d save $4,000 even after buying a 1 way ticket and driving back 950 miles. Jump on CarGurus and check it out. Kendall Toyota of Eugene has tons of Tacomas all discounted off MSRP.

The sales guy called this afternoon to do a followup, it's his day off.

I told him I wanted more off the price & I'm not paying for those add-ons.
I told him I will not pay a dime over $44,500 out the door with all fees included & I will bring cash when they want to sell the truck.

I told the sales guy I hate dealing with 2 people to buy a vehicle. It's a bunch of shit. "Let me talk to my manager". Screw that shit.
Plus, the manager said yesterday he wouldn't even make me a deal unless I test drove it first! I almost walked off the lot at that comment. We were the only customers there!

They’ll do anything to keep you from walking off the lot. Absolutely use that. It’s worked well for me.

You don't want to tell them that you'll pay cash up front; they make a lot of money from loans. Next time, just negotiate a price and when they ask you how you'll pay, tell them you'll decide that later. You can tell the finance guy that you'll pay cash after you've agreed to a price.

Scary thing is that payment is still probably lower than the average deal these days on a new truck ... especially full size. OUCH !

    Ok, update!
Went back to yesterday's dealer to try & close the deal. Guy is a real dick, I felt bad for the sales guy. I felt like I needed a shower after that! He actually had the balls to raise the price!

Went to another dealer, I remembered I knew the service manager there. I called her & she asked if I could be there by 5pm, I said yes. She introduced me to the guys & she said to take care of this guy.
Drove several cars including a silver DCSB exactly like the silver one we looked at yesterday. Well, I am partial to silver. MSRP was within a few dollars of the other car. I explained what happened to us yesterday & showed them the paperwork. I told them I'm ready to buy if they don't play games.
One problem. This one had a bunch of dealer added options like ceramic paint coating, windshield coating, seat treatment warrantied for 5 years against stains. Also had a step the wife loved. Those extras & probably a few I forgot was about 6k putting the total at $48k I told him I didn't want the add ons. All the tax, license etc would have put it well over 50k. Sold it to me for the MSRP. I did buy the 84 month, 75,000 mile extended factory warranty that covers everything but wear items deeply discounted because I put so much down (I put everything down LOL). They didn't even charge me extra for the GPS package.
This truck is light years above my 2009 Access cab! Will take me forever to learn all the stuff on this thing. I think I got a great deal.

I'm in Oregon so this doesn't apply to me, but I was curious how that works buying a vehicle outside of CA to be registered in CA. It seems like there is probably some sort of scam in place to prevent everyone from CA coming to Oregon or basically going anywhere besides CA to buy a vehicle and bring it back. My truck is pretty similarly equipped as the one OP is looking at and I was no where near the outrageous price they are trying to get him to agree to. None of the non-sense games they are playing over $2k either.

I remember years ago when I worked for Ford there were 50 state emissions and California emissions (explain how California is not one of the 50 states). We would routinely get phone calls from California buyers trying to buy from us (I aggressively priced everything new) and I had to explain I legally couldn't sell them the truck. They tried circumventing California registration but we weren't about to get into issues with that for damn sure.

Awesome! Congrats on the new ride! Glad you were able to find a deal that feels good for you. Has long as you are happy with the deal that's all the matters! Enjoy the new car smell on your tacoma!

    There are two annoying aspects:

    1. Vehicle must be smogged prior to CA registration if purchased out of state. Yes, your brand new vehicle purchased yesterday with 50 miles must be smogged because you bought it out of state.
    2. Paying all the taxes and fees. A good dealer will work an estimate into your loan. Then CA demands more when you show up to the DMV.

That’s about it. No major “scams” of note.

I thought you said $2k off MSRP? They have adjusted market value of $2k then took it off? That’s not the same as $2k off manufacturers MSRP

I think the sandbag thing goes away once you have the truck leveled. I noticed a huge difference during the big Florida rains in my Gen2. I have a rack and basket on the back now too so that does help.

The sales guy was probably selling aluminum siding before Toyotas. Dealerships don't hire these guys for the knowledge.
