1993 White 4DR, 4x4, 4.0l, 5spd, 200k. askin $995. right now i just want it as a beater truck to have when im home on leave and eventually would make it a project truck. anything would help in so far as things i should be aware of.

    goblue64,
I had a 1984 V6 Cherokee 4x4 and a 1987 4.0 I6 Comanche 4x4. Both were good with very few problems. I did have to replace the exhaust manifold on the 4.0 at 90k miles.
If the 1993 is as advertised for $995 asking , I don't see how you could go wrong.

Wow.... I was just gonna say the main oil seals usually go around 100k miles. So, I would assume it's already been changed and in need of another one. You'll know when you see oil dripping from behind the oil pan.

IF I were you...I WOULD NOT commit to anything until you see the rig in person, drive it, inspect it, etc.

The last thing you wanna do is spend that money on something that will cost you another $1000 or more to get it on the road. YOu're better off waiting and searching for something else.

I had a '91 XJ and it was great. '91 was the first year for the H.O. 4.0 Liter inline six. I would check the condition of the unibody and the compression on the cylinders. At 200k it may be time for a rebuild. Can you say,"4.7 Stroker kit?"[IMG]

I had a 98 with the 4x4 and 5 speed stick. Awesome wagon that got surprisingly good gas mileage. I would check for rust since it is a MD vehicle, check the rear main seal, and compression. If all check out, jump on it. Those engines were pretty much bulletproof.

I had an 89 Cherokee that I got rid of with 258K miles on it and it was still running good! The 4.0L I6 is about as bullet proof as a domestic engine as you can get. If it runs and is not a rust bucket/smoker that's not a bad price.

Don't be afraid of Cherokees with leaking rear main seals. It's a good bargaining chip and not that hard to do. About a half day job the first time.

X2 on Jansters post, keep it civil gents. Ive had two cherokees inbetween my tacomas, they are great (mostly) vehicles, thats not a bad prices if it can pass muster. Be wary on rust issues, seals and the electrical system. Best of luck.

Had two....a '93 and '98, both 5 spd Sport models. Loved 'em dearly but mine became high maintenance after 70K although they spent more time on dirt than pavement. Check the obvious....U-joints, exhaust manifold, wheel bearings, transfer case, suspension, etc. FWIW, I liked the '93 better and had very few issues with it compared to the '98. As mentioned, that 4.0 I6 is a killer motor.

Only if you are some punk kid with nothing better to do than hate on a vehicle for the hell of it.

Jeep interiors are bathed in cheap plastic. That plastic however, has nothing to do with reliaiblity, and I'd put the 4.0 engine up against ANYTHING that Toyota has ever built in longevity. My Brother-in-law bought a Cherokee right after my Brother bought mine. His has over 200k on it, and he wheels with it regularly.

Have some respect for the person who started this thread. I'm pretty sure he/she doesn't care what you like or dislike.
