Looking at 2008 Quad Cab - suggestions?

So I'm looking at a 2008 Quad-Cab with the TRD package. It has 87k miles and is Certified (only good for 1 year 13k miles).

    Truck is $21k.

While looking at the truck a few things concerned me -

First it's motor was loud, sounded like very loud lifter tick. Is this normal? Do Tacoma have lifter, valve or injector issues?

I read the TSBs and didn't see anything about engine oil gelling, is that still a problem with the V6s?

Lastly while checking the underside for rust I was mortified to see the frames are C-type and not boxed. What gives? I thought the Tacoma was on a 4runner chassis. My '98 4runner is completely boxed.

I live in the Salt Belt as well as off road my trucks regularly - should I be planning to have the frames boxed in?

$21,000 while under blue book is a lot of coin, I'm just wondering if a 4th Runner would be a better value if I'll be able to get a 5th gen for that price in a year.

I'd also hate to be upside down on the Tacoma in 2 years.

where i work we have all kinds of toyota vehicles: tacoma, sienna, matrix,.... none of these vehicles with mileage up to 222K at the moment have a "loud" engine. i know some tacomas have a slight tick but anything more than that is a cause for concern imo. the issue you are asking about is prob why PO traded the vehicle into the dealership anyway.

I'll see if I can get a video clip. You can't hear any noise in the cab, it's when you pop the hood.

Wouldn't the dealership pick up on something wrong prior to certifying it?
