Appreciate all the thoughts here. Definitely going to take a good look underneath. Anyone by chance know how vehicles do in Kansas in general through winters? Do they salt roads there? This guy is a dealer and picked this up at auction, so he likely doesn't have the specific historical knowledge like we find here. I reviewed the video he sent and it's actually 194K miles not 220K, although that's prolly not a big difference to anything.

For the spring recall, I supposed I can count the leafs to check? Will the dealership still do that recall if I buy it? Do I even want them to? I would be planning a small lift almost immediately anyway.

Not sure about Kansas winters but crusty vehicles can end up anywhere, I see them from time to time here in south Texas and we are far from anywhere that salt is used on the roads.

Recalls typically don't gave an expiration but you can always check the status of recalls on any vehicle by entering the VIN on the manufacturer's website or recalls.gov

Get the vin number and check Toyota website for service history and open recalls. I beleive you can get the service history online.... not sure about open recalls are available on line. Worst case take vin # to a dealer and ask. If you want to use the stock leafs for you lift and the recall is still available, I'd get the recall done. I beleive the recall was but in place due to risk of rear spring breaking and repturing gas tank. Probably a really low probability of happening, but worth correcting if Toyota is willing to do it.

As mentioned above, most important thing is the frame condition. If that's decent, most everything else is repairable. If you really want/need a locker, later, there are lots of threads on here about adding lockers, either from a TRD off road or after market.

Sounds like you are looking for a bit of project to work on with your son. My son recently started driving my 2010. When I first got the truck in 2010 I was concerned his car seat would fit in the back seat. Now he's driving it... crazy.

This forum is fantastic and there are some really knowledgeable and helpful individuals on here. If it is doable someone on here has done it and most likely documented how to do it. Good luck.

Unfortunately Toyota took alot of the detailed information off the Toyota owners website, you can still find it on TIS but the free site doesn't have it on there anymore.

Well, I appreciate everyone's info here for this thread, but I ended up passing on this truck. Drove 3+ hours up and back to no avail, but some things you have to see in person. Above the frame, the truck was in decent shape and I would have been interested. But the frame was in too bad of shape for me. More than surface rust, it was bubbling and flaking in most spots. IF there was ever a candidate for a frame recall it would be this truck. It's the best price I've seen a DCSB, but now I know why.

There was also a curious "chirp" when I let off the clutch shifting through the gears. Is that a sign of the clutch plate or something needing replacement? Seller said I was "letting off the clutch faster than he does" so he doesn't hear that when he's shifting, but we were having to get up to speed pretty quick so I was accelerating faster than normal. Also wanted to see how the truck felt anyway.

Oh well, the search is back on. Everything just seems so far away from me here in Houston, but it looks like I need to take a flight west to find anything decent.

Thanks again for everyone's thoughts on this one.

Chirping noise is probably a bad throwout bearing. Good luck on your search!

A chirping noise on an 05-06 Tacoma means the head gasket is blowing.

Chirping while shifting is related to head gasket? It was definitely directly related to me letting out on the clutch while shifting.

My 1st thought on the chirping is from the afore mentioned mount issue due to frame issues, but could be simply throwout bearing starting to go. If it was chirping just sitting there or just cruising that would likely be part of brake master cylinder

Good you passed on the truck,as it's basically worth nothing with a rotted frame.

Yeah, disappointing for the wasted drive, but I am too. The idea is this will be something for me and my son to have fun wrenching on. That will be no fun with a frame that's falling apart on us.
