I prefer the only "brain" my transmission uses to be the squishy one behind my ugly ass mug. I got the 6MT in my '19 TRD Pro, and it's great.

The sensor radar thing is big, and does make the addition of front-mounted accessories challenging, to include the grille. I'd bet that aftermarket options accommodating the sensor are on the way, and will be available by Xmas. Bumpers/bars/lights/etc... are a different matter. If it sits in front of that sensor, it's probably going to f*** with it in ways that will only bug the shit out of you.

Yea, I wish it was an option to just not get that, I just want a regular truck. But NONE of the brands offer a regular truck anymore, they all have some kinda BS computer crap that you really don't want or need which will inevitably cause problems down the road.

My grandpa still has his '66 Chevy he bought brand new... original transmission (4-speed) and he's put a few engines in over the years... the way modern trucks are with all the plastic and computers and stuff I can't see ANY new truck lasting as long as his has... but moot point, because it isn't an option!

I'm still leaning towards a Tacoma, seems like it'll work out well for me, hoping I can address a few of those issues and be happy with one.

I had a '66 with the 283/3 on the tree, at 100k the rings were shot. I added a quart of oil every tank of gas. My 1st gen has over 200k and burns no oil to speak of. I would also expect my 3rd gen to do better than that.

as far as that goes, yes! but that small block chevy can be replace for under $1000 and the truck will continue to last.

Don't get me wrong the technology for fuel injection and all that (which is the biggest reason for a little better engine longevity these days) is great, thats wonderful to have!

the things I don't like are some of the "too far" stuff like the truck auto-braking for you... and all the computer crap that goes with it... yes in some cases maybe it could save a crash, but so does paying attention!!! That's where I'm at. The GMC 1500 has this dumb ass shutter in the grille thing where on the highway it'll close the shutter to direct the air around the truck in an attempt at getting 0.0010 mpg better economy... in the meanwhile relying on an electric fan to keep the engine cool.... that's the dumbest thing I"ve ever seen, and expensive sensor, a motor and a shutter.... this is one of those... "just leave it alone" situations, air is SUPPOSED to go through the radiator and cool the engine, that's a good thing! thats the kinda stuff I mean we can do without.... it's stuff like that and computers and engineering and junk that make things so expensive and nobody ever WANTS to pay for that, but we don't get a choice! Nobody ever said, "hey, you know what I'd like... I'd like to restrict the air going into my radiator, that seems like a good idea" LOL

yea I saw they finally gave it the android auto/carplay thing which is really nice. and some nice looked led headlights. I like that.
I dunno if that's going to significantly change the price or not. it didn't seem there were any changes to things like the transmission?

You sure you don't want a manual? The auto software may improve, some don't have any issues so IDK.
Also, I'd test-drive the Ranger just for fun.

I very seriously considered a manual... but it's not even an option becuase I need the crew cab longbed. and they don't offer it in that.
But I kinda do like the idea of the auto for being stuck in traffic, it'll be a lot more convenient in the morning with drinking my coffee and such. That said, I just hope the auto can last and work good.

and yea I was reading that some don't have issues, thats kinda why I was wondering the specifics of the issues people are having, is it just a preference thing as to how it shifts, or is it a real problem like longevity.

Transmission sucks, constant shifting even with the recent TSB. Also, have a transmission shudder between 40-55 in 6th gear that I'm told Toyota considers a normal characteristic of the Tacoma. Bringing it in again next week to see if anything can be done to fix the shudder.
Currently have 13000 miles and I'm coming from a Gen 2 Tacoma that I traded with 250,000 wonderful trouble free miles.
I like the interior and tech upgrades with the gen 3 but can't live with this engine/trans setup so I will be selling it and getting a 4runner very soon.

You should get an extended or overnight test drive to see if you like it. The Dealer gave me an Auto for an extended test drive for a few days, going up a long hill the transmission would cycle 4th, 5th, and 6th gears as if an epileptic monkey having seizures was playing with the shifter. Its not a Mechanical issue so I would not really worry about longevity, it's probably more to see if you can deal with the driving characteristics.

do you think it's something that would appear in one day, or does it have something to do with HOW the transmission "learns" as you drive, since it's supposed to adapt to driving habits?

I have no idea how that works, drove that truck for 3 days and it was enough for me.

it's literal facts, - If you aren't looking at it like that... that doesn't change the fact that it's still happening exactly like that.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a pickup for longevity and not wanting to beat the piss out of it, treating it like a racecar.

Having a 6MT, I can (and do) keep my engine in the 1500 - 2500rpm range where I've run all my cars/trucks.

So what's the engine cycle rated for before it needs replaced?
Show me where I said you had to drive to like a racecar?
I told you peak power was high in the RPM range, which it is. You drive it like your granpappys old truck, it's gonna disappoint.

I can do that with auto as well. It won't do that passing or towing though.
