Him having Tacoma buddies makes my theory even more believable. They should know that these trucks have big frame issues. Also that kinda perforation doesn't just happen over night. His buddies probably told him about the campaign. I'll bet he then took it in to the dealer. They said they frame is junk and needs replacement and it's not covered. There is no way they said the frame is ok. When's the last time the vehicle passed inspection. That would be a tell tale depending what state your in and what their inspection laws are.

Either way be thankful you didn't buy it. Unfortunately some sucker will, and they will be screwed

as for fixing it, trying to find good solid metal to weld patches to would be a chore. Trust me I went through this with my 2004. It was near mint everywhere except the frame. It gets expensive trying to weld a frame back together unless you are set up to do such things on your own.

"Nice truck but has frame rust."

    Seriously. Walk away.

    Unless....

You find another donor truck with a smashed up body with a good frame and are looking for a project to build. But other than that, yeah, just walk slowly backwards into the bushes...

Would pick up, but not for that price. Frame replacement/repair is expensive.

I have a buddy who just bought a 2001 jeep wrangler on auction for $3,000 with twice as bad frame rot as this truck. Apparently for his jeep the rust on the frame is so common, they make entire replacement sections for that frame that you can weld on. He bought the piece for a couple hundred bucks and welded it to the frame.

OP there is shit you can do, but ultimately this thing is junk. For $9k he's selling it like its a clean southern truck with zero rust. Be straight up with him and tell him he has a piece of shit and you'll give him $4,500, then spend a grand fixing that frame up as much as you can. That's if you really want this thing.

There are a few places that sell a few partial sections of the frame as replacement weld-on sections for areas that commonly rust out on Tacomas. Autorust.com is one of them...

    https://www.autorust.com/product-category/toyota-tacoma/tacoma-doublecab-4wd/

I just don't know why anyone would want to go through the trouble on a new-to-them used vehicle (unless it was practically given to you). There are plenty of used 1st gens out there in good-great condition with rust-free frames. If you live where rust is common, you might have to travel a bit to find one. Here in the southwest you rarely see rust on a vehicle's frame.

that sellers thinking, is pretty ignorant. There are people who take the meaning "built to last" the wrong way and don't bother doing any maintenance. Then try to sell the vehicle at at value thinking they will get their money's worth until all the flaws are pointed out to them.

    Pretty much stock right now
That frame is toast and out of warranty. Unless you are a crackerjack welder, and get it for salvage value, it's a part-out at best. Or find a frame and swap it. Asking price is absurd.

OMG! The seller is definitely hoping to find someone gullible enough to buy it at that price. Sounds like he's stuck with it and he's just trying to do some quick cash with it. His price is absurd, really. With a toast frame like that, the truck is worth $500 to $1000 max (depending on the condition of body, interior, drivetrain and engine)

Sure Toyotas lasts forever and they are super reliable, hence why they can fetch high prices, but this one is just worth... almost nothing

You can find a truck in waaaaaaaay nicer condition than this one for the price he is asking or even half the price if you're patient.

Don't believe him on the possibility of maybe being eligible for a new frame by Toyota, as the deadline is over for this one and you must meet specific criterias and requirements, so it's not as easy as it sounds to get a new frame

Run away from this truck as fast and as far away as you can..... unless you get it for really really cheap and you're ready to tackle a restoration project (or because you want a parts truck)
