Still new to the site and am looking for a used tacoma 4x4. Budget is limited. I saw one I like but not sure about it because over 170K. Is there a certain mileage I should stay away from?

Documented maintenance matters more than miles. If it's 1 or 2 owners with good records it's fine. If it's 7 owners with no records I might not touch it.

Really get into looking it over and take it for a thorough test drive. If you’re not comfortable looking it over, then buying anything with that mileage on it is a bad idea to start with. Properly maintained the mileage is absolutely nothing to worry about. My 06 is nearing 180k and I’d drive it across the country tomorrow without worrying. So to maybe answer your question, 170k is nothing to worry about if it’s in good condition

170k if you’re the original owner is no problem.... 170k as a secondary or tertiary owner, very questionable

maintenance and how the truck was treated it’s entire life matters a lot at that mileage

170k is nothing to shy away from. There is a reason Tacomas, 4Runners and Land Cruisers hold their value even with huge miles. Plenty of people on here are at 300k+. But those are people who also take care of their truck. My is at 162k and I've done basic upkeep and an AC compressor. I hope to see 200k+ with it. Biggest thing is rust. Check the frame on the passenger side by the cats if it has ever seen salt. Other than that, there are not many common problems. At 170k stuff like ball joints and wheel bearings are due for replacement. The drive shafts like to vibrate, steering racks get old, etc. Early trucks have head gasket issues, 2012's have problematic smog pumps.

Paying a good mechanic $100 to look the truck over could save you from a lot o those nickle and dime type wear and tear repairs.

That truck just hit it's half way life. As long as it's been well maintained and the owner can back that up with paper work or receipts, I wouldn't worry at all. Check the frame for rust, and check that the 4x4 works.

I'm the third owner of my truck, it's at 165,5xx as of this past weekend. My brother was the previous owner, meticulously maintained. He bought it with less than 20k miles on it I think. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. (Though, I bought it with 128ish k miles)

I found a 2011 with 130k and the place where it is at the owner said I could get it inspected and he would try to take some pics since I don’t have a way of getting to see the vehicle right away. It’s red (not my fav color) but could deal if it is in good shape

Same situation here. I wanted 4wd and not beat to shit so it meant high mileage with my budget. I recently picked up a 2010 with 190k, based on the carfax it felt primarily like commuting miles. But, you're always taking a risk buying a car whether it has 20k or 200k miles. I'd recommend getting a Pre Purchase Inspection if possible - most of the Toyota dealers I called were going to charge less than $200.

I just did my first oil change and had the oil analyzed - luckily the results were great and wear indicators are below average:bananadance:

Aux back up lights, Bed lights, Re-located trailer plug, Good dooby, a.k.a. jumper cable mod, Heated seats, back up camera,
I replaced the motor at 238k due to a popped head gasket... Months after getting a new frame.
Other than that, this truck has cost me nothing other than maintenance and wear items.
Which is good. That frees up money for mods. Lol
