Why hasn't anybody powdercoated their frames? We use to powdercoat airframes all the time in my aircraft days

Doesn't powdercoat go to shit once it chips?

And hard to get powdercoat all inside the C channel layers where the whole rust thing is the real issue. All the surface crap can be fixed, the sandwiched frame material cannot.

It eguates to around $23,350 in US dollars...too much money to spend on a vehicle with a rusted frame regardless of the year and miles IMO...

It doesn’t look horrible to me. Certainly not a totaled truck. I would negotiate them paying for undercoating with a warranty into the deal if you like the truck.

My 2012 has lived in upstate NY and while it is less rust than that, EVERY truck with a frame looks like that around here.

    Sock Cucker!

That's the Toyota FREE treatment for their extended corrosion warranty program for ALL 2010-2015? Tacomas...That's why I think that one my qualify so he might not have to negotiate any undercoat...it could be paid for by toyota.
They scale it with high pressure air and then coat the inside and the outside...and then that gets you a warranty extension on frame life. My truck had it done with 130K on it...There is no ineligibility as long as you are from salted road states...That's why I'm wondering if it extended to canada.

INFURIATING!!!! Fucking salt...That really is crazy to look at...

Within the extremely harsh environment (as it affects vehicles made of steel) of the "rust belt" areas any Corrosion Resistant Coating (CRC) application, in my experience regardless of the product used and stellar claims made by the distiller of the snake oil, must be viewed as an interim solution to be followed up by repeated treatments for the life of the vehicle.

My uncle, a Korean War vet who lived the remainder of his life as a cross-country independent trucker, sprayed the chassis of his tractor with used engine oil from same¹ and never had any problems with frame or undercarriage rust. The key is to do this periodically and almost religiously at least once, twice is better, a year...

    --------------------------------
¹ - For those who have never experienced used diesel engine oil take my word; it is the nastiest, blackest, stickiest, foul smelling crap you will ever be subjected to. I.e. the perfect stuff to protect your frame from rust. Yet it to must be applied periodically as part of a routine maintenance plan.

Just curious, is there a 'rusty frame' box to check off when adding the info to KBB? I haven't looked at KBB in a long time...

Rusted frames is a manufacturer problem, not an individual vehicle problem. And in Toyota's it doesn't impact the overall vehicle value.

Your 2015 is going to rust out on you. Sorry if you didn't know that. LOL

We are all going to be hosed with the frame thing. I'm just hoping my truck has become my second vehicle by that time.

A TSB is a bulletin and doesn’t “cover” anything. That would be a warranty.

OP I don’t see anything other than surface rust on that truck. Get it checked at the dealer and buy the truck.

Doesn't matter whose fault it is, rust is rust and most people I know would steer away from spending over 23k on a vehicle so doomed...

Your comment on my vehicle was kind of smarmy, but that's ok with me if it does rust out. It's a company vehicle that I have ZERO invested in. When it's done, I will get another FREE Tacoma, that works for me...

I'm pretty disheartened. I looked at a few other Tacomas from 2012 to 2015 and they didn't have rust anywhere near as bad. My preference would be the manual transmission shortbox pictured in my original post. I think I'm going to pass on this one. Enough people have said to walk away from this truck. Too bad it's the only manual shortbox I can find. Guess I'll keep an ear to the ground for the foreseeable future.

    Thanks for everyone's input!

If it was just the specs and bits on the outside of the frame I’d be like just buy it but second look of your pictures the entire inside portion of the frame rails is blasted with rust spots. To me that is just too much a pain in the ass to go and wire wheel it out and coat in a metal protectant. And you’d have to try your best and get the boxed section up to speed also.

As for all the doomsayers I’d say take everyone’s holy opinion with a grain of salt. There’s lots of people that underestimate the frame rust thing but we’ve also got a lot of chicken Little’s.

It just seems like this particular tacoma has rust issues beyond what I'd be willing to deal with. I still want one and hope to buy one eventually. I will continue the search!

Thanks for your input. I appreciate it. I agree. If it was just on the outside of the frame in smaller spots, I would buy it. However, the rust has penetrated too muh for my liking.

I drive a lot for work in my ecoboost. I get tired of passing the slow Tacoma's on the passes. Get in the right lane if you can't maintain the speed limit up a slight incline. Oh ya, I get about 21 mpg with the 3.5. It's what a truck should be. That's why my wife drives the Tacoma, it's a girls truck.

I would love to hear this. Is it the non rusted frames? Nice interiors? Gas mileage? 4wheel disc brakes? Real beds that are not made from hasbro? Able to accelerate 60 in under 6 seconds? What makes the Tacoma stand out? I know it's not the options, or build quality. So what's left?
