I used to work at a shop that sold yamaha and suzuki quads. Ive always been a honda guy, but the foreman 450 i had was more like a farm tractor than an atv, so the guys at the shop talked me into a suzuki vinson 500. better power than the foreman, easier to ride on the trails (because the top speed wasnt 35mph), has great build quality and is made in the USA. Ive been very happy with the suzuki, and in the 1000 miles ive owned it there have been 0 issues. the brand that was in for repairs more than any other? Polaris. in a shop that didnt sell them. just for what its worth.

Not to hijack your question, OP, but I'm in the same situation. I am stuck between 2 ATVs. A suzuki king quad 400 or 500. I mainly want an ATV for trail riding with another passenger. Both are capable. But in the future, I'll probably put it to work as well. Hauling small loads of wood or dirt or something. Both are capable. But I always worry that there might come a time I would need the extra 100cc's. Not sure when or why or how, but I've always never wanted to get an underpowered ATV.

Hate to agree with this since you found 2 possibilities, but this is true.. Some of my family members have had polaris brand rides and got rid of them before they were broken in because they had problems..

I actually like Suzuki a lot too, but I feel like they got rid of their best with the king quad 450. My favorites are a Honda Rancher, Grizzly 500, king quad 500. Those are all solid quads, I think can-ams are nice but overpriced. Also I believe we bought our 2012 sportsman 500 for about $4800 new, so I think the one your looking at is a bit too expensive.

Our 05? Polaris sportsman 800 has been a champ. It's rolled a few times and gone through every terrain imaginable, including being driven practically under water and 100's of miles through the desert. Tons of power and efi is awesome. Definitely opt for efi if you can. Only complaint I have is the trannys can be stiff. Still works though. I would probably get the newer 400. I have that bike too and it's had zero problems.

Not big enough for two people though

I have owned all kinds of quads from honda to kawasaki to suzuki to yamaha to polaris. The polaris' are by far THE best ones out there. Never have problems, always start right up, always hold up. We now have three sportsman's (700, 700, 800) and a ranger xp. If I were you, I would go for the newer one. It's probably going to be in a lot better shape, especially if the 500 has been used for plowing (and it's three years older).

I have ridden a friends honda 250 Utility style (sorry not sure what kind) but it has plenty of room for me and my wife. Not 4x4 though and would really like it to be. I have the double cab short bed so I am not sure if it will even fit either way. I did come across a Raptor 600

    :ohsnap:

Of course that isn't 4x4 and would probably have issues if both of us were to ride at once. It is only 3k and right up the street. :D

    Yeah would definitely prefer a 4x4 though.

Can you fit the Grizzly in the back of your short bed?

Really $4800? I can barely find a used one for that around here.

I have a Polaris Sportsman 500H.O. that I bought barely used about 7 years ago. It has been bulletproof thus far and I regularly run it down a seriously rough trail. I would not hesitate to get another.

To answer your question, I would get the 400 simply because it sounds newer and meets your needs.

I wish I would have gotten a long bed. So much more useful.
