    Evening all!

I am hoping to join the family and have been eyeing up a 2006 with 160,000 on it. Have the carfax looks ok. Rear ended at some point early in its life minor damage that was fixed. All things else look OK. Except one problem. The picture attached shows a hole in the frame just off an exhaust hanger. Thoughts? Should I avoid this and keep looking? Or does the location of it allow it to be patched and called a day?

    Thanks!

Avoid that nightmare. The rust will just get worse. Spend your hard earned money on something else.
Anything can be patched. Buy where else will a hole appear down the road?

I somehow doubt thats the only hole. Too bad they didn't take advantage of the frame warranty when the still could.

Check the inboard wall of the frame rails next to the catalytic converters. Rust tend to be the worst there:

I'd avoid the truck unless it's selling for half of normal KBB and you don't mind continually patching up rust holes every year...

Don’t buy it, that truck is it’s way out no matter how cheap it may be. Look for one that has had the frame replaced or travel out west for a rust free one. Mine had the frame replacement (which has been great, drives like new due to many new parts).

Quick lesson on rusty tacomas. There is a recall out & if a truck has missed its due date - its now coming out of the owners wallet to get it replaced. This one has missed that date & you'll have to pay $$$$$$$. So I'm sorry, its a 100% no. I believe its 12 years from the purchase date & any amount of owners. Sorry if that isnt perfectly correct. Mine is a 2013, so I have the paperwork but am waiting till closer till the due date. You get one shot & if they check the frame & say its fine, then you've wasted it. That's why I told the dealer not to look at it for that reason & they agreed.

An 06 has missed that date & with that rust - its a money pit.

That truck has the potential to bankrupt you and cause a crash when it breaks in half. Run Forest!

That’s not true. I hope you’ve got the white goop CRC done. Otherwise, you’re going to be crying the blues when you’re denied a free frame in the future.
