Ok true. I see. But say I want to have the option of 4x4 at a ramp or maybe a non ramp beach that I wouldn't feel comfortable in a 2wd. A lot of these trucks are open diffs. Peg legged. I don't need to go fast. Fuel economy might not be a good reason so let's go to the 4x4 factor. That's something to consider.

Agreed, settling a little too much IMO. With that said, a fellow TW guy I know had a 4 banger 2013 AC and recently bought one of those tear drop style trailers. After one weekend he traded it in for a v6 DC as he couldnt go more than 35 and was worried about making it up a steep grade.

Personally I thought the 4 cylinder had more ass than that, but he was constantly worried about getting hit as he was a mobile blockade essentially.

I would personally go with the 4cyl 4x4. The 2.7 is a bullet proof motor and you will absolutely be able to hold 55mph on the highway. Especially with the 5speed. I have my 4 banger loaded down (about 750lbs constant load) and it doesnt have a problem in the hill country where i live, just downshift and turn some revs, after all thats what these little motors were made to do. Ive also towed a small home made steel cattle trailer on occasion and it doesnt have a problem with that. If you dont plan on towing very often, the 4cyl will 100% do the job, itll just do it a little slower. If you are going to tow regularly heavy loads, you should be going with a full size anyways as neither of the tacomas v6 or i4 are great tow vehicles. From what your post says, it sounds like the 4 cyl will do everything you want it to and itll be cheaper and easier on gas too. I get about 15-17 in my v6 6 speed and i got about 18-22 in my 4cyl before i added all this weight on it. I now average around 16.5 with it loaded down, but i drive the shit out of it and am not nice to it.

You cant go wrong with either truck since theyre both manuals, i would just figure out how much of a hurry you are in and base my decision on that. Hope this helps some, i have a v6 6spd 4x4, and a 4cyl 5speed prerunner and i love them BOTH. Good luck, youll dig either one. A v6 6spd 4x4 is the ideal truck for me, but based on what youre looking at id go with the 4wd 4 banger or just keep looking and be patient for the 6spd 4x4. Took me about 8months to find mine

I'm on limited funds and need to get out of a car I'm upside-down in. V6 4x4 6speed not really an option unless 200k miles to make it in my price range. Im trying to get a tacoma to save my ass from being upside down bc after negative equity ill be even in a taco that won't depreciate as fast like a car. I had my last taco for three years before wrecking it and still got all my money back from insurance.

Turns out the v6 6 speed has a 2" body lift with a 4"-6" fab tech db lift , 35"x12.50r15 mud claws. Spacer on carrier bearing. Nice greasable u-joints though. Not a fan of how the lift was done. Any thoughts. My gut told me no.

id also go with your gut.. If I was buying i'd want to do the lift myself, not try and fix something someone else already did to it..

Were you referring to @Casper66 ? If so, I believe he had a 4 banger with an auto.. I've driven both the auto and manual 4cyl, and the manual has a noticeable difference in power due to the extra gear.. His new 6spd looks real nice!

I had a 4-cylinder 2nd gen 5 speed for 100K wonderful, trouble-free miles. If my needs (and desire for a locker) hadn't changed, I'd still have it. I pulled a 6x10 utility trailer loaded with bikes and gear all the time with no issues.

Sounds promising! If you haven't already, I would go to Toyotaowners.com, make and account, and enter the vin number so you can take a look at any maintenance that was done through Toyota dealerships. It might give you a better idea as to the condition of the truck, and whether or not it has had a frame replacement, etc. Good luck!
