I’ve read others just drain under the mat as you suggested. I would do that first and see if that’s a problem for you and then consider holes in the mat if it is.

I installed Extang Soft Fold from Luke at Truck Alterations. Talked to him on 12/27, it was at my garage on 12/29, FedEx. Best price, and safe shipping. Trifecta 2.0, fit like a glove. I put this same cover on the '21 TRD, just under different name.
Had to set in 4 flanges with bar aluminum backing. All good. www.truckalterations.com

The only holes the bed cover are asking to drill, are in the composite bed liner. And this is optional.
My backflip kept out 95% rain while traveling thru 2 hours of rain down pour in SLC.
The only water getting in was just behind the cab, in the corners of the bed behind the rear window.
Even the "kit" included with the backflip didn't stop this. The amount of water was pretty insignificant, but I imagine the drain would help this.

Having no experience with a tonneau cover, I agree. If there’s a requirement for drainage, there’s no guarantee the leaks will be only where the drain lines are. If this were indeed a significant issue requiring redress I’d call it a product defect and reconsider the product altogether. Poking holes in this or that is best when there’s no recourse.

I just laid the hoses flat and against the front of the bed and flipped the bed mat over them. Any water that comes down the hoses runs out of the OEM holes and I never see it. What I am going to add though is a couple strips of tailgate seal.

That is the only place I see any water after I wash the truck, and honestly it isn't much.

If you really want to see any gaps you may have around your tonneau cover just turn your bed lights on when it's really dark out. You'll see any problem areas right away!

I never installed a drain hose in the 2010 Taco (not sure it came with one). The amount of moisture that got in during the rain was negligible, at least until the 10th or 11th year of use. Now enough gets in that we make sure none of our gear is stowed in permeable containers. Most of that time was spent in the dry Mountain West, though there was a 2-year stretch in northern Virginia (rain-forest-lite).

Dust is the bigger villain around here. Same story, though. Performed great for 10 or 11 years, and now it can get a bit dusty in there. If you're not going 40-50 mph on a flat, dry, dirt road, please pull off to the side and let us by.

4 brackets are included, which assemble to the stock tacoma rails. They are bolted to the channels. You can download the complete instructions on an Extang tonneau. Here is picture of included brackets. I could go with a solid fold, except we have experience with the 2021 tacoma soft fold tonneau.

No the tonneau clamps use them. I think the mx4 uses it's own rail system leaving the OEM rails open.

Dumb question, what are people trying to preserve the oem rails for?

I currently used mine to secure stuff when I need too i remove my tonneau a lot to haul tall wide stuff on my current 2006 Taco access cab

at some time I may need to do the same on my 2023 double cab once it comes in on May 2023 eta

So I'm looking for suggestions on a light weight removable tonneau but it'll be mostly secured full closed

Yes, with the Bakflip MX4 you take off the rails and use those holes to attach the cover rail brackets, but the brackets have another hole to allow you to reattach the OEM rails. They just sit as little lower but have full function.

Update: I used the Bakflip website's chat feature, and the rep at the other end confirmed that the '22 covers will fit '23. They even emailed me a letter on Bakflip letterhead guaranteeing the fit. The wifey approved the purchase, and because she was in a good mood and I push my luck, she also greenlit the rock sliders. Sometimes you eats the bar, boys!

OEM hard tonneau covers. Anyone having trouble finding them? I called parts and they said they don’t make a hard cover for the 2023, but I know they made them in prior 3rd gen years which should fit (in theory). I have a 2023 pro short bed. Any ideas where I can find one? Been pouring over eBay with little success.

I think the oem one requires cutouts in the black trim on the top of the rails if your looking that could be a hang up. I've looked at lomax and retrax pro. Both are nice but offer different options if you open to others.
