I've been lurking around reading about the 3rd gens. I really an ready for an upgrade from a regular cab 4x4. I need the room and the 4 cyl is weak as puppy piss.

So, I was hoping to get into a 2023 slightly used Tacoma TRD OR, Sport or SR5. Just want some of the nicer things like a backup camera, power windows, cruise, intermittent wipers, etc. I have an 2006 GMC 2500 W/T that lacks all that and that's enough.

I've been reading about some of the issues others have noted and have, but it also appears that plenty are happy with their 3rd gens.

Got any input for me? Not really wanting to dive straight into a 4th gen. My thoughts were if I got the last year of the 3rd gen I might have some decent resale value in 2-4 yrs if i decided to go 4th gen.

Take a long test drive, and several times if possible.
It’s a good truck, but a definite shift from a full size V8.

also keep in mind; while they’re are some complaints- it’s usually the same few around here ready to spread repeat their message, so consider the source. There millions of other owners happily motoring, while the same few are here spewing.

Just remember that all the complaints and issues people discuss here are a very small sample size of the Tacoma population. I think it’ll take some getting used to coming from a pushrod V8 to a DOHC 6 cylinder.

I enjoy my 2022 OR DCLB, no problems at all after 20,500 miles. The transmission shifts better than the one on my 2018 OR DCLB did and I rarely get over 4,000 rpms when passing. I did upgrade the stock fog lights and interior light bulbs with Diode Dynamics lights/bulbs.

if you get one from a dealer tell them you want it inspected for the Coolant crossover pipe leak and also inspect for timing chain cover leak. those are the main 2 you will run across here.
someone here just posted they bought a used one and discovered the timing chain cover leak. took it back and no help from the dealer on that issue.

Totally agree with all of you on the sampling rate of complaints. I currently own both a 2500 and a regular cab 2014 4x4 Tacoma (daily driver) too small, need more room and the trade off in mpg's is negligible between that weak 4cyl and a V6. Just prefer to get in something a little bigger and nicer. Thanks for the input so far.

Check out some of the different models on Cars.com. I think they will all hold their value with the only option being thousands of dollars more for even the cheapest 2024...like a good 10,000 more.

I traded my 2013 Sierra 4X4 V8 extended cab for my 2023 TRD Sport CC long bed. I currently have 8000 miles on the Tacoma The V6 needs to rev to get the truck going, but it has decent power. Not V8 power by any means. The transmission likes to shift to the next gear quickly. The transmission started to shift better at around 2000 miles. The Tacoma has less interior room than the Sierra, but access to the bed is easier because of the low sides. I don't tow or haul any heavy objects, so I wanted a mid size truck. I'm very happy with the truck so far. As others have said, do an extensive test drive before you buy.

Go with a certified preowned from a toyota dealer. That way you get the 100k powertrain warranty.

I came from a 2013 Ram 1500 Hemi to the 2021 SR5 with the 3.5L motor. I’ve been happy as a clam. Driven it all over North America and I think it’s the perfect truck for me. Mine has all the items you mentioned you would want and it also doesn’t have any of the crazy fancy stuff that my Ram had which malfunctioned all the time.

Compared to a full size truck, it is underpowered but you just have to be aware of that and test drive it fully like others have said. I love it and it has all the power I need because I don’t tow or haul anything big other than a bed full of personal gear and backseat full of dogs.

I think these 3rd gens are the perfect balance of function and form with nothing too fancy. It’s a 2021 and I have 51K miles on it with absolutely no issues. Would buy the exact same truck again in a heartbeat.

Thanks for all the input! Bought a ‘23 TRDOR yesterday with 2.3k miles. Couldn’t be happier. Being used to my 2014 2.7/AT 4x4 Regular Cab this 2023 feels like a beast compared to that old 4 Banger. I feel like I have gone from the Apollo Lunar Module to the Starship Enterprise. Love it. Thanks again for the input.
